The Shaykh : And the expiation for severing ties, as this hadith has informed us, is that the one who wants to return to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and repent to Him should preempt his brother, the one who has cut off relations, with the greeting of peace. It may be that one of them persists in the severance and does not want to repent to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), but for the one who wants to repent, it is sufficient for him to preempt that one who has cut off relations with the greeting of peace. His greeting to him will be a removal of the previous sin that was upon him. Then, by His grace and generosity, Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) appoints an angel from the angels when one of the two who have severed ties greets the other, and this other one refuses to return the greeting, an angel better than him returns it to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 402 This is the narration here in the book, and it contains some abbreviation. This abbreviation is clarified by the narration of Ahmad, because what does "he refused to accept his greeting and peace" mean? In the narration of Ahmad, it means: meaning he refused to accept it in the negative and refused to return it in the affirmative. What did he say? Instead of the man who had severed ties, to whom the one repenting from the severance had greeted, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) appoints an angel to return the greeting to the one who repented from the severance. He returns it (peace and blessings be upon him) Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 402 Thus, our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) treats every person according to his action: if it is good, then good; and if it is bad, then bad.
