Explanation of the hadith of Hisham ibn 'Amir (may Allah be pleased with him): (It is not permissible for a Muslim to boycott a Muslim for more than three days.)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is not lawful for a Muslim to snub another Muslim for more than three nights. As long as they are cut off from each other, they are turning away from the Truth. The first of them to return to a proper state has his expiation for that inasmuch as he was the first to return to a proper state. If they die while they are cut off from each other, neither of them will ever enter the Garden. If one of them greets the other and he refuses to return the greeting or accept his greeting, then an angel returns the greeting to him and Shaytan answers the other.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 402
.
This hadith is among many hadiths that the author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in this chapter regarding the prohibition of a Muslim boycotting another Muslim. Boycott (siiram) means severing ties. However, this hadith is one of the strongest hadiths in this chapter in warning and deterring from this sin, as it contains a legislation or information that he (peace be upon him) had not previously mentioned in earlier hadiths. In addition to saying:
It is not permissible
, meaning it is forbidden for a Muslim to boycott, i.e., to sever ties with a Muslim,
for more than three فوق ثلاث
, meaning nights. The Messenger (peace be upon him) attributed this prohibition, indeed this forbiddance, of boycotting for more than three nights to his saying:
they are turning away from the Truth
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 407
, meaning: they turn away from the path, i.e., they distance themselves from it. He is one who turns away from the truth, i.e., is far from it. He attributed the prohibition and forbiddance of boycotting and severing ties to his saying:
for they are both فإنهما
, meaning the two who have severed ties,
they are turning away from the Truth
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 407
, meaning: regarding their severance,
The first of them to return to a proper state has his expiation for that inasmuch as he was the first to return to a proper state.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 402
, meaning (peace and blessings be upon him) that the two who have estranged themselves, the one who returns to himself and turns back from his error to the right, that becomes an expiation for his previous severance. And if the first of them returns, that is an expiation for him; his precedence in returning is the expiation. What is the meaning of "returning" (fi'') here? They were in a state of severance, and as came in a previous hadith:
They meet, and this one turns away from this one, and this one from this one
, so whoever returns first, his precedence in returning is an expiation for him. Returning (fi'') is to hasten to greet his brother whom he had severed ties with, meaning to offer the salam. That is, if three days have passed for the two who severed ties, which is a dispensation from the Lawgiver as we mentioned in the previous lesson, and then the fourth day has entered, then both of them have entered into sin.
So the first of them to return
, meaning: returning to the right and to the truth is an expiation for him, and that is by hastening to greet his brother with the salam. This is the returning (fi''), and this is turning back from error to the right. If he does that, then this is an expiation for what preceded from him of severing ties with his Muslim brother.
