The Shaykh: Indeed, all praise is due to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our own souls and from the badness of our deeds. Whom Allah guides, none can mislead, and whom He leaves to mislead, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger, [Ali 'Imran 3:102], [An-Nisa 4:1], [Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]. As for what follows:
Indeed, the best of speech is the speech of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of matters are their innovations, every innovation is a religious innovation, every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire. And after that:
The chapter on the one who is patient with the harm of people: He narrated with his authentic chain from Ibn 'Umar from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 388.
This hadith clarifies that it is better for the Muslim to live with people, deal with them, and mix with them; because in this companionship and this mixing there is good for him and for those he mixes with. That is because the one who mixes is either in need of knowledge, in which case he benefits from what they have by mixing with people, especially if these people are among the people of knowledge, virtue, and good character. And if he is among those people—that is, among the people of knowledge, virtue, and good character—it is even more fitting for him to be a benefit to the other people he mixes with and lives with. The truth is that this hadith contains a refutation of a trend followed by some Islamic sects for a long time; namely, those who are known as the Sufis.
These Sufis are known among all Islamic groups or sects as those who withdraw into themselves and sit in their corners, in houses they called by special names, "takayya and zawiyas." Indeed, some of them went to the extent of leaving the company of people entirely, even in these zawiyas and takayya. So one of them would go out to live with the beasts in the deserts, wildernesses, and uninhabited places, all of this to escape from mixing with people. That is because they believe that this mixing does not bring them good, but rather brings them harm. Therefore, they preferred to live outside of buildings. They have many, many stories in this regard, mentioned in the books of spiritual exhortation and the books of the miracles of the awliya (close friends of Allah) and the righteous, as they claim.
This hadith contains a clear refutation of these people; because Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) did not send Islam for people to live in a single row. Rather, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) sent down His religion and sent His messengers so that there would be a Muslim community (ummah) in which some live with others, some cooperate with others in good, and they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong; as He (Mighty and Majestic) said:[Ali 'Imran 3:110]. The man who lives alone and does not live among his kind has no opportunity to be described with this virtuous quality with which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) described this community, and one of its most prominent qualities was [Ali 'Imran 3:110]. The man who lives in the wildernesses, deserts, and uninhabited places finds no one to enjoin good for him or forbid evil for him. He finds no one to teach him anything of what Allah taught, whether he is in a state of knowledge or in a state of ignorance, he finds no one to learn from him what Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) taught. Therefore, he lives his whole life barren, like the lands in which he lives, barren of knowledge, barren of good character, and barren of the softness and gentleness that a Muslim should possess, considering that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described the believer with many qualities; among them he said: . This quality of being easy-going and gentle cannot be imprinted on that person who lives in the deserts. Therefore, it came in many authentic hadiths in which the Messenger (peace be upon him) describes the Bedouins who live in the deserts and do not live in the cities as having hard hearts and harsh livers.
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
(70) O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (71) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
