Does not the hadith of "Grow old, grow old" indicate starting with the eldest, then the one to the right of the eldest?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : And the hadith
Grow old, grow old كبر كبر
does not indicate starting with the eldest, then the one to the right of the eldest, because it was started with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then the one to his right.

The Shaykh : What we know, may Allah bless you, is that one of the ways to reconcile the hadiths when there appears to be some contradiction between them is to place each hadith in the context in which it was reported. Perhaps you can recall with me that this hadith you mentioned
Grow old, grow old كبر كبر
came in the context of a conversation before the person to whom the matter is to be referred. Perhaps you can recall that.

The questioner : Yes, in the case of Huyaynah or Mahyaynah.

The Shaykh : The one whom the Jews killed.

The questioner : Yes

The Shaykh : Yes, so in that case,
Grow old, grow old كبر كبر
since it does not have a generality that includes anything other than what came in this specific context, it should not be used to contradict a specific hadith in a specific context. Rather, each hadith is applied in the place where it was reported.
So if the hadith
Grow old, grow old كبر كبر
is in Sahih al-Bukhari, as I recall, then it should not be used to contradict the Sunnah of starting with the right, the right of the one who pours, which is established in two hadiths: the hadith of Anas ibn Malik and the hadith of Sahl ibn Sa'd. In them,
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for water, so milk mixed with water in a cup was brought to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank, and some residue or leftover remained in the cup. On his right was Ibn Abbas.
and in a narration,
Some Bedouins, and on his left was Abu Bakr al-Siddiq.
and in a narration,
Elders from Quraysh. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the one on his right for permission to give a drink to the one on his left. He refused and said, "No, I would not prefer anyone over the leftover of your drink, O Messenger of Allah."
or as he said,
So the Messenger (peace be upon him) gave him this cup and addressed those sitting.
until nothing moves in their hearts when they see the Messenger (peace be upon him) giving precedence to the Bedouin over the elders of Quraysh, or Ibn Abbas over Abu Bakr. Then he (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) said,
The right-hand one, then the right-hand one.
-And upon you be peace - this is the wording of Anas.
As for the wording of Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi, he said,
The right ones, then the right ones, then the right ones
So we observe in this authentic hadith narrated in al-Bukhari and Muslim from the two Companions mentioned, Anas and Sahl, we observe that the one who pours, we observe matters.
The first of which is that the one who pours only started with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because he asked for water, so the story moved out of the scope of being used as evidence that the Sunnah is to start pouring with the eldest of the people, because the starting was only because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for water.
After that, if we look at the continuation of the hadith, we find that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had drunk what he drank and the cup remained in his hand, and he wanted to give water to Abu Bakr because of his high status, he asked permission from the person on his right. We find that this person became the one giving the water. If the prevailing idea in some countries were that the one giving water starts with the person on his right, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)—excuse me—if the prevailing idea in some countries were that the one giving water starts with the most senior of the people, he would have started with Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would not have needed to ask permission from the Bedouin or from Ibn Abbas who was on his right. But we see, as we mentioned earlier in the authentic narration, that he asked his permission. So, if it were not because he was the most deserving to be started with by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in giving water, because he was on his right, he would not have needed to ask his permission, as we said earlier. When he did not give permission, he gave it to him, and he made the ruling clear to those present:
The right-hand one, then the right-hand one.
or
So the right ones, then the right ones, then the right ones.
. Therefore, the Sunnah of giving water is not the same as the Sunnah of speaking. This is the first hadith
Grow old, grow old كبر كبر
, and it is applied in its context. And this hadith, which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) applied and established as a Sunnah for the people after applying it by his saying
So the right ones, then the right ones, then the right ones.
, remains as the Sunnah of starting with the right in giving water. So we do not see any contradiction, praise be to Allah, between the two hadiths.
