What is the ruling on leaning while eating?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Please proceed.

The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. And prayers and peace be upon the noblest of the prophets and messengers, our master and our prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
As for what follows:
Your Eminence, what do you say about the issue of leaning while eating? I ask for clarification, and may Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Leaning

The questioner : While eating

The Shaykh : There is a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he said:
I do not eat while leaning.
I do not eat while leaning.
The term "leaning" in this hadith has been interpreted in two ways. The first, which is the most common among the commentators and scholars of the language of the hadith, such as Ibn al-Athir and others, is "sitting cross-legged" (turu'b), meaning the eater sits with his legs crossed. This is the first opinion. The second opinion is that "leaning" means resting on the right or left hand, as mentioned in a hadith in the two Sahihs from his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The greatest of the major sins are associating partners with Allah, being undutiful to parents, and false testimony. He was leaning and then sat down, and then he said: "Beware of false testimony, beware of false testimony." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept repeating it until we wished he would stop.
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized false testimony and the encroachment on rights that follows it by leaning and then sitting, which is an indication of his concern regarding the magnitude of this major sin. The meaning that I am reassured by and that brings peace to my heart is this second meaning, because leaning while eating is a trait of the arrogant and haughty, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was, as you know, the master of the humble. Therefore, he used to say:
I eat as a slave eats and I sit as a slave sits.
So, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ate according to the rule he established for his Ummah, as in his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
A few mouthfuls are enough for the son of Adam to keep his back straight. If it must be more, then one-third for his food, one-third for his drink, and one-third for his breath.
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would only sit in the manner of the humble. As for leaning while eating, it is the manner of the arrogant. Whether the stronger opinion is this interpretation of "leaning" or that one, we should note that his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
I do not eat while leaning
does not mean that eating in this posture is forbidden, but rather that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) abstained from eating in this manner, whether sitting cross-legged or leaning on his right or left hand. The best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and he used to eat on the ground, not sitting cross-legged and not leaning, but rather sitting on his heels or extending one leg and sitting on the other. This is what we know of his way (peace and blessings be upon him) in his eating, in his actions and his words.
Yes.
