Explaining the danger of relying solely on one's own understanding of the Qur'an in isolation from the Sunnah, and refuting some hadiths to that effect, such as his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : But the calamity only occurs when a person relies on his own intellect and opinion in understanding the Qur'an, and does not derive the correct understanding of the Qur'an from the one to whom the Qur'an was revealed, namely our Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Take this hadith, for example:
Verily my father and your father are in the Fire.
Sahih Muslim 203
They asked him, "What is the matter, O Messenger of Allah?" So his answer (peace and blessings be upon him)—and here emotion is mixed with faith, not the independence of emotion striking at faith—was his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in response to the one who asked about the reason for his weeping (peace and blessings be upon him):
I sought permission from my Lord to visit my mother's grave, and He granted me permission. And I sought His permission to seek forgiveness for her, but He did not grant me permission.
: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned regret and sorrow: "Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, did not grant permission to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to seek forgiveness for his mother. What is the reason?!"
The reason is:
And the request of forgiveness of Abraham for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became apparent to Abraham that his father was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him
[At-Tawbah 9:114]
.
Therefore, the fact that Allah did not grant permission to His chosen Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek forgiveness for his mother supports the hadith of Anas. The hadith of Anas is explicit, and the hadith of Abu Hurayrah is corroborating, and there are other chains besides Abu Hurayrah, such as that of the noble Companion Buraydah ibn al-Husayb, who also narrated a similar hadith. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not grant permission to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek forgiveness for his mother. So what is our position regarding his mother (peace and blessings be upon him) and his father? The position of the Prophet is our position; it is not permissible for us to contradict him in anything he informed us about from our Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He. For Allah, Mighty and Majestic, as you heard just now, if we dispute over something, we are to return to Allah and the Messenger. So He said:
It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair
[Al-Ahzab 33:36]
We have no choice ever in judging that so-and-so is in Paradise or so-and-so is in the Fire. This is a matter of the unseen, and our reference for it is the Book and the Sunnah, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I have left among you two things by which you will not go astray as long as you hold fast to them—both of them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah. And they will not separate until they return to me at the Pond.
