What is the ruling on one who curses his parents out of anger, or one who curses them intentionally? Is there a difference between cursing them intentionally or otherwise? Does the cursing have an expiation or repentance, or what does the one who curses do?

The questioner : What is the ruling on one who curses his parents out of anger, or one who curses them intentionally? Is there a difference between cursing them intentionally or otherwise? Does the cursing have an expiation or repentance, or what does the one who curses do?

The Shaykh : Yes, cursing one's parents is among the major sins. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he cursed the one who curses his parents. It is the same whether that cursing is direct or indirect, because it was said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "Does a man curse his parents?" He said:
Yes, one abuses the father of another man, who in turn abuses his father. One abuses his mother and he in turn abuses his (the former's) mother. نعم، يسب أبا الرجل فيسب أباه ويسب أمه فيسب أمه
Sahih Muslim 90a
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Cursing one's parents, whether directly or indirectly, is among the major sins. There is no difference between it happening without a cause or out of anger, except that in the case of anger, if a person reaches a state of anger where he is not aware of what he is saying, then there is no blame on him in that state, because he does not understand what he is saying. Allah the Exalted only holds a servant accountable for what he understands, not for what he does not understand. However, a person should, when he is intensely angry and quick to anger, use the means that remove or alleviate that anger. A man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to convey a piece of advice to him, so he said:
Do not get angry لا تغضب
. He repeated it several times, then said:
Do not get angry لا تغضب
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If he feels anger, he should seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan and perform ablution, for that is among the means of removing anger. Among the means of avoiding the consequences of anger is for a person to move away from the place and withdraw from his opponent so that nothing of what is forbidden occurs.
