Fatwa number ( 20163 )
Q: If a man curses another man, and the gates of the sky do not open for him because he does not deserve it, does the curse return to the first man or not? And is it permissible to curse a woman on the grounds that she is not wearing hijab?
A : Cursing is not among the characteristics of the believer who is complete in faith. It was narrated by Imam Ahmad in (his Musnad) and al-Tirmidhi in (his Jami') from 'Uqbah from 'Abdullah
Ibn Mas'ud
(may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The believer is not a slanderer, nor a curser, nor one who uses foul and obscene language.ليس المؤمن بالطعان ولا اللعان ولا الفاحش البذيء
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 18:588
saidal-Tirmidhi: A good, unique hadith. And it is established in (the two Sahihs) from the hadith ofThabit ibn al-Dahhak, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Cursing a believer is like killing himلعن المؤمن كقتله
. And on that basis, it is not permissible for a believer to curse any of his Muslim brothers, except for those whom Allah has cursed in His Book or whom His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) has cursed. It is not permissible to curse one who has committed a sin because of that sin, such as a woman who does not wear the hijab or the like. Rather, the Muslim should engage in sincere advice with her and encourage her to wear the hijab in a good manner and through good da'wah. Whoever curses one who does not deserve to be cursed has been threatened with severe punishment, and the curse returns to the one who uttered it if it finds no place to land. This is indicated by what was narrated byAbu al-Darda'(may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
when a man cures anything, the curse goes up to heaven and the gates of heaven are locked against it. Then it comes down to the earth and its gates are locked against it. Then it goes right and left, and if it finds no place of entrance it returns to the thing which was cursed, and if it finds no place of entrance it returns to the thing which was cursed, and if it deserves what was said (it enters it), otherwise it returns to the one who uttered it.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4905Hasan (Al-Albani)
It was narrated byImam Ahmadin his (Musnad)and Abu Dawudin his *Sunan*. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
