What is the ruling on beating an animal severely?

The questioner : This actually concerns the treatment of animals. He also speaks about the villages, saying, "We live in a very mountainous and rugged area, and we mostly use animals for all our transportation, such as camels, donkeys, and mules. When we go to the school, which is about ten kilometers from the village, we beat them painfully so that they walk and cover the distance to the school quickly. What is the ruling on beating an animal to make it speed up to cover a certain distance, or on beating it intentionally? I have read a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that animals will take revenge from humans on the Day of Resurrection. Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good?"
The Shaykh : The answer: Praise be to Allah. There is no doubt that an animal has a soul and sensation. It feels pain when it is hurt, and it is difficult for it to bear what exceeds its capacity. Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to burden an animal with what it cannot bear, whether that is a load on its back, a path it must traverse that it cannot manage, or anything else that is difficult for it. As for beating it, it is permissible when there is a need, on the condition that it is not severe. It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of Jabir regarding the story of his camel, where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) caught up with him, and in it, he beat the camel. The original ruling regarding beating an animal, if it is for a need and not severe, is permissibility, and its evidence from the Sunnah is the hadith of Jabir. However, if it is without a need, or if it is a severe beating, or if it is a beating that causes the animal great difficulty, then it is not permissible.
The questioner : May Allah reward you.
