The questioner : I am a young Muslim, and I know with certainty that sorcery is forbidden. Nevertheless, I find that in these days many people suffer from episodes of illness and visit several doctors, but no treatment benefits them. Instead, they eventually go to one of the fortune-tellers or sorcerers, and it is revealed that they have been bewitched by other people. The sorcerer then cures them of their pain by his own method, namely by using certain books. Please advise us on this matter; may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : What the questioner mentioned refers to the removal of the spell, which is the undoing of the sorcery from the bewitched person.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : The most correct view is that it is divided into two categories. One is that it is done through the Qur'an, the prescribed supplications, and permissible medicines. There is nothing wrong with this, because it contains benefit and no harm; indeed, it may be required, as it is a benefit without harm.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for when the removal of the spell is done with something forbidden, such as undoing sorcery with sorcery, this is a matter of disagreement among the scholars. Some scholars permit it out of dire necessity, while others prohibit it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the removal of the spell, and he said:
It is from the work of Satan هي من عمل الشيطان
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 13:100
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : It was narrated with a good chain by Abu Dawud. Based on this, undoing sorcery with sorcery is forbidden, and a person should turn to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) with supplication and humility to remove his harm. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says:
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:186]
, and He the Exalted says:
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allah? Little do you remember.
[An-Naml 27:62]
.

The questioner : Yes.

The questioner : This message came from a Muslim who believes in Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) from an Arab country.
