The questioner : His second question is that when a man dies, they place Quran reciters at his grave for a fee until Friday comes, until Friday, does the deceased benefit from this recitation at his grave, and is the recitation permissible or not?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. As for what follows, this practice is among the deniable matters that were not known in the era of the righteous Salaf, namely gathering at the grave and reciting.
As for the deceased benefiting from it, we say that if the intention is for him to benefit by listening, then that is nonexistent because he has died.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) thatAl-Adab Al-Mufrad 38 So even if he hears, if we say that he hears in this state, he does not benefit, because if he benefited, it would follow that his deeds would not cease, and the hadith is explicit in limiting the deceased's benefit from his deeds to the three things we cited the hadith for.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : And if the intention is for the deceased to benefit from the reward obtained by the reciter, meaning that the reciter intends for the reward to be for this deceased, then since it is established that this is a religious innovation, innovations have no reward, rather as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said.
The questioner : O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him.
The Shaykh : And misguidance cannot turn into guidance. Then this recitation, according to the content of the question, is for a fee.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : And a fee for deeds that bring one closer to Allah is invalid. And the one who hires for righteous work, if he intends with his righteous work this, the righteous in terms of type, even if it is not righteous in terms of kind, as I will explain, if Allah wills.
The questioner : If Allah wills.
The Shaykh : If he intends with the righteous work a reward in this world, then this work of his does not benefit him, nor does it bring him closer to Allah, nor is he rewarded for it, by the saying of the Exalted[Hud 11:15-16].
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : So this reciter who intended with his recitation to obtain a worldly reward, we say to him: this recitation is not accepted, rather it is vanishing, there is no reward or recompense in it. And thus, the deceased does not benefit from what was gifted to him of its reward, because there is no reward in it.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : So the process is a waste of money and a destruction of time and a departure from the path of the righteous Salaf (may Allah be pleased with them), especially if this money spent is from the deceased's estate, and there are in it minors and the weak-minded, so what is not due is taken from their money, and the sin increases in sin, and Allah is the Helper.

When a person dies, all action is cut off for him with the exception of three things: sadaqa which continues, knowledge which benefits, or a righteous child who makes supplication for him.
