Wearing the Pants and the Tie

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: His EminenceThe Shaykh- May Allah preserve you - , you mentioned ... the pants. I said: it is imitating the disbelievers; so what do you advise me to do? And my work ... requires wearing the pants and what is called the "tie," and may Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : As for wearing the "tie," I do not see any justification for it, nor do I find any excuse for the one who wears it. As for wearing the pants, some people in certain jobs may need something like that; for example, carpenters and blacksmiths. If they wore the garments that are called "kalabiyyah" in some countries, or "dishdashah" in others, or in the Arabic language we learned from the Sunnah, the "qamis" (shirt), which may be long or short; such clothing may not facilitate performing the trades I mentioned earlier. However, if an employee is supposed to imitate the disbelievers in a clean job that does not involve such trades as I exemplified earlier, that is only because the taste of the disbelievers dominates such attire. This is not an excuse for this employee to consider it a reason for being excused from being held accountable for placing the "tie" around his neck and wearing tight pants. In reality, the "tie" represents the taste of the disbelievers more than the pants do. But the pants have another calamity, which is that they outline the private parts, especially when one stands to pray in the first or second row; you find that when they bow, and more specifically when they prostrate, the buttocks and what is between them sometimes become visible. This is not an excuse for this employee. Rather, I believe he is sinful to the greatest degree; because he seeks the sustenance allotted to him, as He - the Exalted - said:
And in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised. وفي السماء رزقكم وما توعدون
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:22]
(there is a difference of opinion regarding the interpretation of this verse) he seeks to reach sustenance through a forbidden means; while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned in some of his sermons that he said:
O people, do not be impatient for sustenance; for no one dies until he has completed his sustenance and his term; so be beautiful in your seeking; for what is with Allah is not attained through what is forbidden. يا أيها الناس لا تستبطئوا الرزق ؛ فإن أحدًا لا يموت حتى يستكمل رزقه وأجله ؛ فأجملوا في الطَّلب ؛ فإن ما عند الله لا يُنال بالحرام
, and Allah - Mighty and Majestic - says in the well-known verse:
And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect. ومن يتَّق الله يجعَلْ له مخرجًا ويرزقه من حيث لا يحتسب
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 25:947
, so I remind every Muslim who is concerned about his religion in general, and about his lawful sustenance in particular, not to adopt means that are forbidden by the Shari'ah to reach sustenance; for sustenance is not attained through what is forbidden.
And this is sufficient, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
