The Ruling on Wearing Trousers?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : ...trousers?

The Shaykh : Trousers are among the calamities that have befallen Muslims in this age due to the invasion of the disbelievers into their lands and their bringing of their customs and traditions to them, and some Muslims adopting them. This is a topic that would take a long time to discuss, but I will say briefly that wearing trousers has two defects. The first is that they outline the private parts, especially for those who pray and do not wear long garments that cover what the trousers outline of the private parts, namely the two buttocks, and even what is between them during the two prostrations. This is a matter that is observed, unfortunately, especially in congregational prayer. A person prostrates and finds in front of him a man wearing trousers, if that expression is correct, and sees the two parts of the thighs, and may even find what is worse than that between them. This is the first defect: that trousers outline the private parts. It is not permissible for a man, let alone a woman, to wear clothing that outlines his or her private parts.
I have elaborated on this in my book "The Hijab of the Muslim Woman". The other defect is that this is the clothing of the disbelievers. Trousers have never, in all these long centuries, been the clothing of Muslims. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
I was sent with the sword before the Hour so that Allah alone is worshipped, with no partner, and I was made to have my provision under the shadow of my spear, and humiliation and degradation were made upon those who oppose my command, and whoever imitates a people is one of them. بعثت بين يدي الساعة بالسيف حتى يعبد الله وحده لا شريك له وجعل رزقي تحت ظل رمحي وجعل الذل والصغار على من خالف أمري ومن تشيه بقوم فهو منهم
And it is reported in Sahih Muslim that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him, and he said to him:
These are the clothes (usually worn by) the non-believers, so do not wear them. هذه من ثياب الكفار فلا تلبسها
Sahih Muslim 2077a
.
Therefore, it is obligatory for every Muslim who is afflicted with wearing trousers for some reason to wear a long jacket over them, similar to what some of our Pakistani or Indian brothers do with the long shirt that reaches the knees. This, in reality, mitigates the outlining of the Muslim's private parts by the trousers. Your turn has passed.
