What is the ruling on removing excess from the eyebrows, as opposed to cutting them?

The questioner : You also ask: What is the ruling on removing excess from the eyebrows, as opposed to cutting them? And if it is forbidden, is it also considered forbidden if a girl removes the excess from her eyebrows on her marriage contract day or wedding night?
The Shaykh: Removing excess from the eyebrows falls into two categories. Either it is done by plucking, in which case it is not permissible, because it is *nams* (plucking the eyebrows), for which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who does it. Or it is done by cutting. Some scholars have said that this is also *nams* and thus falls under the curse, while others have said it is not *nams* and thus does not fall under the curse. However, even so, it should not be done unless the eyebrows are so thick with hair that they cast a shadow over the eye and make it difficult to see. In that case, there is nothing wrong with removing what poses this danger.

The questioner : Yes.
