The Shaykh : The Shaykh said: "And he informed us—peace and blessings be upon him—that
Whoever makes an image will be commanded on the Day of Resurrection to breathe the soul into it but he will not be able to do so. مَن صَوَّر صورة كُلِّف يوم القيامة أن ينفخ فيها الرُّوح ، وليس بنافخ فيها أبدًا
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5360Sahih (Darussalam)
" He says: "Al-Bukhari and others." Here you see the Prophet’s—peace and blessings be upon him—generalization of the term "image" when he said:
Whoever makes an image مَن صَوَّرَ صورةً
, and this indefinite article includes both three-dimensional statues and non-three-dimensional ones, those with shadows and those without shadows as well. He said: "The wisdom behind the prohibition of statues: Among the secrets of this prohibition—and it is not the only reason, as some people think"—and this is a keen observation by the author—"and it is not the only reason, as some people think. Protecting tawhid (the oneness of Allah). Among the secrets of this prohibition is protecting tawhid and avoiding imitating the polytheists in their images and idols which they make with their own hands, then they sanctify them and stand before them in humility." And as we mentioned earlier, this also includes the other types of images because they are the product, work, and possession of the disbelievers... Protecting tawhid, and so on. This is a statement on which there is no disagreement, and it is good. He said: "Among the secrets of the prohibition regarding the maker:
The sculptor المَثَّال
That image-maker or sculptor who carves a statue is filled with arrogance, until it is as if he has created something from nothing, or originated a living being from dust. And it was reported that one of them carved a statue, spending a long time in its carving, so when he completed it, he stood before it, amazed and stunned, at its features and expressions, until he addressed it in a state of arrogance and pride: 'Speak, speak!' And I think, from what I have read, that when it did not speak, he smashed it thoroughly." And for this reason, the noble Messenger said:
Those who paint pictures would be punished on the Day of Resurrection and it would be said to them: Breathe soul into what you have created. إن الذين يصنعون الصُّور يُعذَّبون يوم القيامة ، يقال لهم : أحيُوا ما خلقتم
Sahih Muslim 2108a
, agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And in the hadith from Allah the Exalted:
Who are most unjust than those who try to create something like My creation? I challenge them to create even a smallest ant, a wheat grain or a barley grain. ومَن أظلم ممَّن ذهب يخلق كخلقي ، فليخلقوا ذرَّة ، فليخلقوا شَعِيرة
Sahih al-Bukhari 7559
, agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. "And beyond that, statues have been and remain a manifestation of the owners of luxury and comfort, who fill their palaces with them and decorate their rooms with them." Is this specific to three-dimensional statues? This statement did not mention whether it is specific to three-dimensional statues?
The student : General.

The Shaykh : The Shaykh said: "General, meaning general in terms of reality, because his statement: 'and they decorate their rooms with them' is not specific to idols in terms of reality; oil paintings, paper drawings, and photographs also fill houses." "And they specialize in making them from different metals. And it is not far-fetched for a religion that fights luxury in all its manifestations and colors, of gold, silver, and silk, to also prohibit statues in the Muslim’s house."
