The Shaykh : Chapter One Hundred: "The Chapter on When One Dislikes Eating with His Slave" He narrated with his authentic chain from here, in my copy, from Ibn al-Zubayr, and the correct attribution is to Abu al-Zubayr, if you have a copy of Abu al-Zubayr’s version. It states: He heard him asking Jabir about a man’s servant, when he relieves him of the hardship and the heat, did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) order him to invite him? He said: Yes.
Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah al-Ansari, from whom Abu al-Zubayr narrates, and he is one of the Tabi'un who frequently narrate from Abu al-Zubayr. Jabir was asked "about the servant," meaning the slave, "who cooks the food for his master, relieving him of the burden of cooking and blowing on the fire," relieving him of the hardship and the smoke of cooking at that time; did the Messenger (peace be upon him) "order the master to invite his slave to eat with him from this food that he prepared for him?" Jabir answered: "Yes." That is, the Messenger (peace be upon him) ordered this. He said:
If one of you dislikes to have his servant eat with him, he should give him his food by his own hand. فَإِن كَرِهَ أحدُكُم أَن يَطعَم مَعَه فليَطعِمْهُ أُكلَةً فِي يَدِهِ
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 198
If this master has a soul that is somewhat too proud for him, more than is necessary, such that he is too proud to share his food with his slave and servant who prepared this food for him, and an example of this is that the cook shares with the head of the household by eating with him, this may be difficult for some people and they dislike it. This naturally indicates some arrogance and pride in the soul of this master, but this is not a major evil; because some souls are repelled by such matters. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed this matter and this pride in not sharing the servant’s food with his master by addressing it thus: if it is absolutely necessary, let him give him some of that food to please that slave or servant. As for the idea that this servant cooked it, so he should not taste anything of it because this cooking is exclusively for the master, this is not permissible. Rather, it is better for this master to sit his slave with him to share his food with him. If his soul refuses that, at the very least, let him give him a mouthful, one or two bites, so that the soul of this servant is at ease regarding his master. This is, in reality, among the methods by which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) put an end to the problems that may occur between the rich and the poor, between the masters and the slaves, softening the gap of difference and disparity between the master and his slave by ordering such familiarity and sharing of food between the master and his slave. He made that, as this hadith informed us, on two levels: the first, and the higher, is that the slave sits with the master at the same table. If his soul refuses that, at the very least, let him feed him from this food that he prepared for him.
