Explanation of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): “It is not fitting for the two-faced person to be trustworthy.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Following this is another hadith, which also has a sound chain of narration. It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
A person who is two-faced cannot be trusted. لَا يَنبَغِي لِذِي الوَجهَينِ أَن يَكُونَ أَمِينًا
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 313
.
It is known that the two-faced person is the one who comes to this group with one face and to that group with another. He is a hypocrite and a flatterer. As it is said, he is like water that takes on the color of every container. He is with this group in their falsehood and misguidance, appearing to support them, and he is with that group in their guidance and righteousness. So you do not know whether he is truly with this group or that one. This is the two-faced person about whom the Messenger (peace be upon him) said: It is not fitting for him to be trustworthy among people. Here, “trustworthy” is in the broadest sense; it is not fitting for him to be trustworthy regarding people’s morals, it is not fitting for him to be trustworthy regarding people’s wealth, and it is even more fitting that he not be trustworthy regarding their beliefs, their jurisprudence, or their religion. This is because he has no religion and no morals, for he meets every group with what pleases them. This means he is a hypocrite. The hypocrite is the one who comes to the Muslims and says, “We are with you,” but when he returns to his companions, he says, “We were only mocking,” or as stated in the Noble Qur’an.
Thus, when the Messenger (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him) says:
It is not fitting لا ينبغي
, it means it is not forbidden.
It is not fitting لا ينبغي
means it is not forbidden. Pardon me,
It is not fitting لا ينبغي
means it is not permissible. And the meaning of “not permissible” is that it is forbidden.
And it is not fitting for the Most Merciful to take a son. وَمَا يَنْبَغِي لِلرَّحْمَنِ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا
. “It is not fitting” does not mean “it is preferable,” as some people might assume. No,
It is not fitting لا ينبغي
means it is forbidden in the strongest sense of prohibition. So here, from this perspective,
A person who is two-faced cannot be trusted. لا ينبغي لذي الوجهين أن يكون أمينًا
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 313
means: it is forbidden and not permissible.
