The Shaykh : Following this is another hadith, whose chain of narration is also authentic. It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 313.
It is well known that the one with two faces is the one who comes to this group with one face and to that group with another face. He practices hypocrisy and flatters them. He is, as it is said, like water that takes on the color of every vessel. He is with this group in their falsehood and their misguidance, appearing to be with them, and he is with that group in their guidance and their righteousness. So you do not know whether he is truly with this group or with that group. This is the one with two faces. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that it is not fitting for him to be a trustworthy person among people. Here, “trustworthy” is in the broadest sense: it is not fitting for him to be trustworthy regarding people’s morals, it is not fitting for him to be trustworthy regarding people’s wealth, and it is even more fitting that he not be trustworthy regarding their beliefs and their religion, because he has no religion and no morals. He treats every group in a way that pleases them. This means he is a hypocrite. The hypocrite is the one who comes to the Muslims and says, “We are with you,” but when he returns to his companions, they say, “We were only mocking.”
So when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) says, it means it is not permissible, and the meaning of “not permissible” is that it is forbidden. . So “it is not fitting” does not mean “it is preferable,” as some people might assume. No, rather, “it is not fitting” means it is forbidden, the most severe kind of prohibition. So here, “it is not fitting for the one with two faces to be a trustworthy person” means it is forbidden and not permissible.
A person who is two-faced cannot be trusted.
