Chapter on Li'an, Explanation of the Hadith of Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Chapter on Li'an.
Then he narrated with a sound chain from Abu al-Darda' that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Those who curse will be neither witnesses nor intercessors on the Day of Rising. إِنَّ اللَّعَّانِينَ لَا يَكُونُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ شُهَدَاءَ وَلَا شُفَعَاءَ
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 316
.
This sound hadith clarifies that those who curse frequently, the "lucanin" (those who curse excessively), are those who make cursing people and other things, such as animals and inanimate objects, a habit. They will be deprived on the Day of Resurrection of being witnesses to what people have done, and of being intercessors for their loved ones and friends as well.
This hadith points to many benefits:
First: The form "al-lucanin" is a form of extreme exaggeration, and this indicates that a person may sometimes curse something that does not deserve to be cursed, and he may be among the truthful ones and the martyrs. This is because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) negated in this hadith that the "lucanin"—those who exaggerate and curse frequently—would be witnesses and intercessors. This form does not contradict the fact that a Muslim may be a believer with complete faith, a truthful one, and a martyr; it does not contradict that he may occasionally commit some slips in cursing. It is the exaggeration in cursing that the Messenger (peace be upon him) mentioned, stating that those characterized by this exaggeration are not fit to be witnesses or intercessors on the Day of Resurrection.
Among these benefits is the affirmation of intercession in this hadith for other than the messengers and prophets. This is, of course, a merit in which these sincere believers participate, whose characteristic is that they do not curse frequently. They share with the prophets in interceding for people on the Day of Resurrection, and this is a great merit, as is clear and evident.
From this as well, if we look at the form of exaggeration "al-lucanin," we say that it does not contradict that one of them may occasionally curse without right. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the most perfect of people, sometimes did something of that. However, Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), in order to complete His favor, reward, and recompense for him, inspired him to supplicate to his Lord, saying:
O Allah, any man whom I have insulted or cursed who is not deserving of that, make it mercy for him and a reward for me اللهم أيُّما رجل سبَبْتُه أو لعَنْتُه وهو غير أهلٍ لذلك فاجعَلْ ذلك رحمةً له وأجرًا
. This indicates that the human trait may sometimes overcome the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so that something may come from him that is not befitting the station of prophethood and messengership. Therefore, he supplicated to his Lord (Mighty and Majestic) to turn what may come from him of placing a curse in the wrong place, whether by mistake or anger, into mercy and purification for the one to whom the curse was directed. If something of that happened to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then the truthful ones, whose rank is undoubtedly below the rank of prophethood and messengership, are more likely to have something of that happen to them. However, it is not befitting for them to do it frequently. For some reason, the form came with exaggeration:
Those who curse will be neither witnesses nor intercessors on the Day of Rising. إِنَّ اللَّعَّانِينَ لَا يَكُونُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ شُهَدَاءَ وَلَا شُفَعَاءَ
