The Shaykh : And it is as if he (peace and blessings be upon him), with this detail, is answering an implied question, as if someone were to say: If there is a charity due for every joint every day; that is, if a person is to give charity every day, and as he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned, the total number of joints is three hundred and sixty, meaning three hundred and sixty joints, then this means that a person has three hundred and sixty charities to give every day. So who is able to give three hundred and sixty charities every day? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to make the matter easy for people and not make it difficult for them, and so that they would not say that no one can give three hundred and sixty charities every day. Therefore, he (peace and blessings be upon him) legislated mentioning types of charity by way of example, not by way of restriction. He says, for example (peace and blessings be upon him), in this hadith:
Every good word is sadaqa.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 422
This encourages us to care for ourselves and others. If I see my daughter or son making a mistake and eating with his left hand, and I say to him, "My son" or "My daughter," "Eat with your right hand," this is a kind word. "Eat with your right hand" is two words, it is not heavy, it is not a long speech. So merely by saying to any person, but taking my son or daughter as an example, "Eat with your right hand," it is a charity that is recorded. So imagine how many charities a Muslim can collect in one day just by kind words, this apart from the other matters that he (peace and blessings be upon him) will also mention in the hadith by way of example, not restriction. So he says (peace and blessings be upon him):
Every good word is sadaqa. A man's helping his brother is sadaqa
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 422
. This hadith gives a second example, saying that helping a man his brother is a charity. It came in some of the authentic hadiths referred to that the Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
And carrying the burden onto your brother's mount is a charity
; meaning, for example, a person needs to load a burden on his mount that he cannot lift alone, so a person passes by and sees his need for someone to help him, and he helps him until the burden is placed on the mount, and it is immediately recorded as a charity. But here the hadith came with a broader wording: your help to your brother in whatever you helped him with is a charity from you for him. This is a second example. The first example is that every kind word is a charity, and by this measure, every help you give to your brother is a charity, no matter what that help is, even if you walked a distance with him to show him a place he is asking about. Then he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
A drink of water which he gives
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 422
, meaning: the man
Charity
specifically, when the one being given drink is thirsty, and you come to his aid and quench his thirst, a charity is written for you. And the hadith here says
And a drink
, meaning absolutely, if any person asked you for some water and you gave him drink, a charity is written for you for that drink. But without a doubt, charities vary with Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) in proportion to their benefit and their impact on the one being given drink. So a person, for example, is not very thirsty, but he drinks because he needs water, and the man gave him drink, and a charity is written for him. But another person is thirsty, and a charity is written for him, but this charity is stronger and has a greater reward with Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).
And finally, a third example, and the examples multiply. A person is about to die of thirst if his Muslim brother did not personally give him drink, he would die of thirst. So he revived him with this drink that he gave him. Without a doubt, this charity is stronger than the first and stronger than the second. And between these three types, without a doubt, there are degrees in terms of the benefit of the drink of water. Then he said in this hadith:
Removing something harmful from the road is sadaqa.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 422
. Removing harm means eliminating harm, and it is everything that harms people on the road. A charity is a piece of wood, for example, with a nail in it; a car passes by and runs over the nail, it bursts, and its owner is delayed and suffers in it as Allah wills. So if a man comes on his way and kicks it with his foot like this, or moves it to the side of the sidewalk, or a banana peel, he also moves it from the road to the sidewalk, or a piece of wood that might injure a person, and the like of harmful things on the road, he removes it. All of this is written for the person as a charity. And it came in some of the other hadiths referred to earlier that there are other types of examples. And so we said that these examples that came in this hadith are not by way of restriction and limitation, but by way of example, otherwise they are more numerous. Therefore, he (peace be upon him) said in those hadiths:
And making peace between two people is charity.
And he also said in those hadiths:
And enjoining what is right is charity, and forbidding what is wrong is charity, and in every glorification is charity, and in every declaration of God's greatness is charity, and in every praise of God is charity.
, and so on. Then, in answer to that implied question that I mentioned earlier, when the Messenger mentioned these examples, it was as if it was an answer to a questioner who said: three hundred and sixty charities.

The questioner: Three hundred and sixty.

The Shaykh : Three hundred and sixty charities. Who is able to perform this collection, these hundreds of charities, every day and night? So he came with these examples to make it light and to facilitate the matter. But he came with a final phrase that made the matter easy in its entirety. He said (peace be upon him):
And two rak'ahs of the Dhuha prayer suffice for all of that.
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 63:128
; meaning, if the Muslim prays the two rak'ahs of the Duha prayer every day, it is as if he gave three hundred and sixty charities, meaning these joints that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has bestowed upon this person. So he must thank Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for this blessing, which a person cannot fulfill the obligation of thanking for. So if he prays the two rak'ahs of the Duha prayer, it is as if he gave three hundred and sixty charities.

The questioner: Meaning, for example, the two rak'ahs of the Duha...
