The Shaykh mentioned the issue: If a person has half the nisab of gold and half the nisab of silver, does one complete the other?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : It is equivalent to five paper riyals. It appears that it is equivalent to five riyals, or four.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : No, this paper currency. If you gave a person a silver riyal, how much would he give you? I hear, but I do not know, that it fluctuates. It is equivalent to four riyals now. Four riyals multiplied by fifty, how much is that? Two hundred and twenty-four, my brothers.

The Shaykh : If a person has half the nisab of gold and half the nisab of silver, does one complete the other?

The questioner : No.

The Shaykh : It does not complete.

The questioner : It does not complete.

The Shaykh : And the brother says it completes. Does it complete or does it not complete?

The questioner : It does not complete.

The Shaykh : All right, you have differed on two opinions, just as the scholars differed on two opinions. Some scholars say that gold is completed by silver; that gold is completed by silver, and that if a person owns half the nisab of gold and has half the nisab of silver, zakah becomes obligatory upon him. But the stronger opinion is the second one, that one does not complete the other, because the texts specified the nisab for gold and specified the nisab for silver. Accordingly, if a person owns half the nisab of gold and half the nisab of silver, is zakah upon him or not? There is no zakah upon him. If a woman has jewelry weighing sixty grams, and she has half the nisab of silver, is there zakah upon her? There is no zakah upon her. Why? Because her gold has not reached the nisab. According to the one who says that gold is completed by silver, is zakah obligatory upon him or not? It is not obligatory, because if we combine this with this, it becomes a nisab. But the stronger opinion, as I said, is that one does not complete the other, just as wheat does not complete barley. That is, a person has a farm of wheat and barley, each of which is equivalent to half the nisab. Does the barley complete the wheat? No, and there is no zakah upon him. So here we say that gold and silver are like wheat and barley; one does not complete the other in terms of the nisab. All right, suppose a man has four daughters. A man has four daughters, and he gave one thirty grams of gold jewelry, and gave the other thirty grams, and gave the other thirty grams, and gave the fourth thirty grams. What is the total?

The questioner : One hundred and twenty.

The Shaykh : Is zakah obligatory upon him for this?

The questioner : No.

The Shaykh : Why? Because each daughter is on her own. Each daughter is on her own; one daughter is not combined with the other. So zakah is not obligatory upon him for this jewelry, because each of the daughters does not own a nisab. But if this man said, "I gave my daughters this jewelry as a loan, not as a gift of ownership," is zakah obligatory or not? It is obligatory, because now he himself owns a nisab. Pay attention to this. This is the first type of wealth in which zakah is obligatory. As for the second and third types of wealth, they will come, if Allah wills, in the next lesson, because the brother Abdul Aziz says that he has questions in front of him that need to be answered, and we, as we have decided.
