Issue: The ruling on combining half of the nisab of one type with half of the nisab of another type for the sake of zakah.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : What do you say about a man who has half of the nisab in gold and half of the nisab in silver? —Peace and Allah's mercy be upon you— Half of the nisab in gold and half of the nisab in silver?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Half of the nisab in gold and half of the nisab in silver, is zakah obligatory upon him or not?
The student: It is not obligatory.

The Shaykh : Why?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, well done. He says there is no zakah in it because this is half of the nisab and this is half of the nisab, and one cannot be completed by the other because they are two different kinds. The evidence for this is the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
Gold is to be paid for by gold, silver by silver, wheat by wheat, barley by barley, dates by dates, and salt by salt, like for like and equal for equal, payment being made on the spot. If these classes differ, sell as you wish if payment is made on the spot.
Mishkat al-Masabih 2808
Therefore, gold is not completed by silver, nor silver by gold; each is an independent kind. Now, what if he has half of the nisab in cattle and half of the nisab in camels?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Huh?
The student: He owes nothing.

The Shaykh : He owes no zakah?
The student: He owes no zakah.

The Shaykh : Why?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : In each case, the nisab has not been reached. Do you agree with this, everyone? Yes. Rest a moment. Now, one minute, my brother.
