Supernatural Events and Their Categories Based on Their Source, and a Warning Against Some of the Exaggerators Among the Sufis and Against the Alleged Miracles of the Saints

The Shaykh: Praise is to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our own selves and from the badness of our deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever He leaves to misguide, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger, [Ali 'Imran 3:102], [An-Nisa 4:1], [Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]. As for what follows:
Indeed, the best of speech is the speech of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and the worst of matters are their innovations, and every innovation is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
I want to seize this opportunity to remind many of the people today who believe in supernatural events of another type, and consider them to be karamah (miracles granted to a righteous person) of the awliya (close friends of Allah); not for anything else except that they are supernatural events. It is necessary for us to know this legal reality as well, which is: that supernatural events are divided into two categories: mu'jizah (a prophetic miracle) for the prophets, or karamah for the awliya; this is the first category. The other category is: supernatural events that are a trial from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for their owners, and they are not a mu'jizah or a karamah for their people; rather, they are a fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), as you have seen regarding the Dajjal (the false messiah).
These two categories are a matter agreed upon among the scholars of the Muslims. The supernatural event is sometimes a mu'jizah or a karamah, and this is of course a beautiful thing, and sometimes it is a fitnah for the one from whom it issues or from whom that supernatural event issues. Distinguishing this type from that type, or this category from this category, is by looking at the source of either type. If its source is a believing man, a prophet or a righteous person, then it is a mu'jizah or a karamah. But if its source is a person you see who does not pray, does not fast, and you may even hear from him statements of kufr (disbelief) which some people interpret by calling them shatihat (exaggerated utterances); then this is not a karamah; because the one from whom this alleged karamah issued is not described as righteous, let alone described as a prophet. Once we know this, what we hear from many people that so-and-so used to walk naked in the streets, and yet supernatural events issued from him; so they are karamah for him; this is not permissible to attribute to Islam in any way. Rather, these are either expressions of tricks, absurdities, and deception from some of these people, or it is a trial from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), as we mentioned. And this is mentioned in the Noble Qur'an:[Al-Anbya 21:35], so the trial by the supernatural event is sometimes good and sometimes a fitnah.
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
(70) O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (71) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
