Clarifying the precise difference between karamat (miracles granted to a righteous person) and humiliations.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : If... believing in such calamities and misguidance comes from people who do evil, but this is outwardly so. This opens the door for people like them to believe in the Dajjal (the false messiah) when he is sent among them. Why? Because, in their claim, he comes to them with karamat (miracles granted to a righteous person). They have not reported these from any of the awliya (close friends of Allah). He says to the sky, "Rain," and it rains. What do you want? A greater karamah (a miracle granted to a righteous person) than this? We do not call it a karamah. This is a matter that transcends the ordinary, but when we see this man claiming lordship, what comes from him among the things that transcend the ordinary is evidence that these are not karamat, but rather deceptions and delusions by him against the people. So the ruling that distinguishes between a karamah and a matter that transcends the ordinary which is... for the people is to look at the source. If the source is a righteous wali (close friend of Allah), then we believe in his karamah. There are authentic and established karamat from some of the Companions and some of the Salaf (the earliest generations), and we do not deny them at all. But we deny such karamat which are in reality humiliations. As for the established principle, we believe in it, and it is a chapter of the matters that transcend the ordinary. The righteous and the wicked share in these transcendent matters, and the distinguishing factor is righteous action. So if one has righteous action, then what comes from him among the transcendent matters is a karamah. And if his action is wicked, then what comes from him among the transcendent matters is not a karamah, but rather a humiliation. And sufficient for you as evidence of this is what we mentioned to you of the matters that transcend the ordinary which Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) causes to occur through the hands of the Dajjal. And now we stop here, for the talk has become long, and our appointment for the rest of the speech on the paragraphs of the hadith is in the next lesson, if Allah wills.
