Explanation of the first condition, which is conformity with the Sunnah, and explanation of the evidence for it, and explanation of the severity of all religious innovations, whatever the motive for them may be.

The Shaykh : The first requirement is that it be in accordance with the Sunnah. If an act, even if it is an act of worship, is contrary to the Sunnah, it is not a righteous deed; because two conditions are required for a righteous deed, and this is one of them: that the righteous deed be in conformity with the Sunnah. The evidence for this is abundant, and I am content in this reminder with a single hadith, namely his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected. مَن أحدَثَ في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو ردٌّ
Sahih Muslim 1718a
. It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim in their "Sahih"s from the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Therefore, any act of worship that was not in Islam when Allah (Mighty and Majestic) revealed to the heart of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) His saying:
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
; this act is not a righteous deed.
And in brevity, and limiting myself to this hadith, I remind you of the discussion of bid'ah (religious innovation), and that it does not accept division into five categories as many of the later scholars claim; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) says:
every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire كل بدعة ضلالة ، وكل ضلالة في النار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam)
; so I am reminding you of this discussion so that you are certain of the correctness of this first condition of the two conditions for a deed to be righteous, which the scholars of tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis) derived from this verse
So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو لِقَاءَ رَبِّهِ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا
[Al-Kahf 18:110]
; that is: the first condition is that it be in conformity with the Sunnah.
