The ruling on returning the greeting to a Muslim.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : What is the ruling on returning the greeting?
Returning the greeting is obligatory; because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) commanded it in the Qur'an in the verse well known to us all, when He said:
And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُمْ بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوا بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا
[An-Nisa 4:86]
. This Qur'anic text establishes the obligation of returning the greeting in one respect, and establishes the recommendation of increasing in the response by His saying:
greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it [in a like manner] فَحَيُّوا بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا
[An-Nisa 4:86]
; that is, at the very least, and this is what is obligatory. As for the other narration, it came that the place of returning the greeting is:
If you meet him, or if he meets him, let him greet him. إذا لقيتَه أو إذا لَقِيَه فليسلِّمْ عليه
.
