The Shaykh mentioned the ruling on returning the greeting to a Muslim.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : What is the ruling on returning the greeting? Returning the greeting is obligatory because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) commanded it in the Qur'an in the verse well known to us all, when He said:
And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it وإذا حيّيتم بتحية فحيوا بأحسن منها أو ردوها
[An-Nisa 4:86]
This Qur'anic text established the obligation of returning the greeting in a specific way, and it established the recommendation of increasing in the response by His saying:
greet [in return] with one better than it فحيوا بأحسن منها
[An-Nisa 4:86]
or return it أو ردوها
meaning at least this, and this is what is obligatory. As for the other narration, the position of the response in the greeting came as:
And when he meets him, or when he meets him, he greets him. وإذا لقيته أو إذا لقيه فيسلم عليه
So what is the ruling?
