What is the ruling on returning the greeting?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on returning the greeting?

Answer:
It is obligatory, unlike initiating the greeting: is it obligatory or not obligatory?
As for returning the greeting, it is obligatory; because Allah says:
And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return itوَإِذَا حُيِّيتُمْ بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوا بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا
[Surat al-Nisa: 86] So, greeting with something better is superior, and returning the greeting is obligatory.
