Lesson on "Encouragement and Warning," Encouraging Visiting the Sick and Emphasizing It, and Encouraging Supplication for the Sick

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : ... We praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whoever Allah guides, no one can mislead, and whoever He misleads, no one can guide. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger,
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
[Ali 'Imran 3:102]
,
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
[An-Nisa 4:1]
,
(70) O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (71) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
[Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]
. As for what follows:
Indeed, the best of speech is the speech of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and the worst of matters are their innovations, and every innovation is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Encouraging Visiting the Sick and Emphasizing It, and Encouraging Supplication for the Sick.
The first hadith is one of the authentic hadiths. He said: It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The rights of a Muslim on the Muslims are five: to respond to the salaam, visiting the sick, to follow the funeral processions, to accept an invitation, and to reply to those who sneeze.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1240
. It was narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah. In a narration by Muslim:
Six are the rights of a Muslim over another Muslim
Sahih Muslim 2162b
. It was said: What are they, O Messenger of Allah? He said:
When you meet him salute him ; when he issues an invitation to you, accept it; when he asks your advice give it to him ; when he sneezes and praises God say, ‘God have mercy on you’; when he is ill visit him ; and when he dies follow him to the grave.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1525
. Al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i narrated it in similar terms.
So if there is room for standing close together, do so, may Allah reward you with good. Make it easy for your brothers... ease what is in your ability...
The Messenger (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
The rights of a Muslim on the Muslims are five
Sahih al-Bukhari 1240
. Linguistically, "right" (haqq) is the established thing that does not admit of doubt. From the legal perspective, the term encompasses what is obligatory (fard), what is a recommended practice (sunnah), and what is recommended (mandub); all of these are rights established by the Shari'ah. So if a hadith like this one comes, stating that it is the right of a Muslim over a Muslim to return the greeting, or as in the other narration:
When he meets him, that he should greet him
; this alone—meaning describing the returning of the greeting and its delivery as a "right"—does not definitively indicate that this right is obligatory (fard). Rather, if we want to rule that this thing, which is stated to be a legal right, is obligatory (fard), and that the one who leaves it off sins and is punished, it must have specific evidence. Mere being a "right" does not indicate obligation; because, as we mentioned, the meaning of "right" is the established thing by any mode of establishment; whether in the sense of obligation, or in the sense of being a recommended practice (sunnah), or in the sense of being recommended (mandub). Therefore, these matters listed in this hadith, whether in the first narration of the two Shaykhs or the other narration of Muslim; these differ in their rulings. Some of it is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah muakkadah), some of it is a collective obligation (fard kifayah)—if some people perform it, it drops off the rest—and some of it is an individual obligation (fard 'ayn). Every issue among these issues must be researched scientifically to give it the appropriate ruling, whether obligatory (fard), recommended practice (sunnah), or recommended (mandub). Here we hear the hadith saying:
The rights of a Muslim on the Muslims are five: to respond to the
Sahih al-Bukhari 1240
