The Shaykh’s explanation of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): “The rights of a Muslim over another Muslim are five…”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : It is one of the authentic hadiths. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The rights of a Muslim on the Muslims are five: to respond to the salaam, visiting the sick, to follow the funeral processions, to accept an invitation, and to reply to those who sneeze.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1240
It was narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah. In a narration by Muslim:
Six are the rights of a Muslim over another Muslim
Sahih Muslim 2162b
It was said, “What are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said:
When you meet him salute him ; when he issues an invitation to you, accept it; when he asks your advice give it to him ; when he sneezes and praises God say, ‘God have mercy on you’; when he is ill visit him ; and when he dies follow him to the grave.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1525
And it was narrated by al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i in similar terms.
So, if there is room for standing close together, do so. May Allah reward you with good, and be generous toward your brothers.
We have returned. What do you have? As far as your ability to…
The Messenger of Allah (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) said, “The rights of a Muslim over another Muslim are five.” The right… is the matter that is established and does not admit of hesitation. From the legal perspective, the term “right” encompasses what is obligatory, what is a recommended practice, and what is recommended. All of these are rights established by the Shari'ah. So, if a hadith like this one comes, stating that it is the right of a Muslim over another Muslim to return the greeting, or as in the other narration:
If he meets him, that he should greet him…
, this alone, namely the term “returning the greeting” and its delivery, because it is a right, does not conclusively indicate that this right is an obligation. Rather, if we want to rule that this thing, which is stated to be a right in the Shari'ah, is an obligation, and that the one who leaves it off sins and is punished, it must have specific evidence. As for it merely being a right, this does not indicate obligation, because as we mentioned, the meaning of “right” is the thing established in any manner of establishment, whether in the sense of obligation, or in the sense of being a recommended practice, or in the sense of being recommended. Therefore, these matters, namely those… in this hadith, whether in its first narration, the narration of… or the other, the narration of Muslim, these differ in terms of their rulings. Some of them are a confirmed recommended practice, some are a collective obligation, where if some people perform it, it drops off the rest, and some are an individual obligation. And for each issue among the issues, it is necessary to investigate it scientifically to give it the appropriate ruling, whether it is an obligation, a recommended practice, or a recommendation. Here we hear the hadith saying:
The rights of a Muslim on the Muslims are five: to respond to the
Sahih al-Bukhari 1240
