Explanation of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): “Hasten to perform six deeds before…”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The hadith that follows is also in Muslim, but in the Book of Tribulations. It is also narrated by Abu Hurayrah, and it is his statement: And it was narrated from him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Hasten to do good deeds before six things happen: the rising of the sun from the west, the smoke, the Dajjal, the beast and (the death) of one of you or the general turmoil.
Sahih Muslim 2947a
Muslim narrated it.
In this hadith, there is a linguistic benefit that may be hidden from some people, which is the occurrence of “or” in place of the conjunction “and.” So his statement (peace be upon him) here:
or the smoke أو الدخان
means “and the smoke,”
or the Dajjal أو الدجال
“and the Dajjal, or the beast,” and so on. This hadith is like the previous hadith in that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) encourages Muslims in it to hasten to the signs of the Hour with righteous deeds, as was explained in the previous hadith. However, this hadith details some of the signs that were not mentioned in the first hadith. He says (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him):
Hasten to do good deeds (before) six things (happen): The rising of the sun from the west (place of its setting)
Sunan Ibn Majah 4056Hasan (Darussalam)
. The rising of the sun from the west is mentioned in the Noble Qur’an, as is well known, and that on the day it rises from the west, at that time
no soul will benefit from its faith as long as it had not believed before
[Al-An'am 6:158]
.
This undoubtedly requires a great deal of faith, especially among people who study modern science and astronomy and the like, and who are mostly—except for those whom Allah wills—adherent to the systems and the laws they call cosmic or natural laws. Then they forget—and some of them deny—He who established them and organized them with this wonderful organization. So the rising of the sun from the west means, without doubt, the reversal of the system of this universe. This reversal is not compatible with belief in it except for the heart of every believer who believed in his Lord (Mighty and Majestic), and that He is effective in what He wills and what He desires, and creative as He wills and as He desires, as He (Mighty and Majestic) said:
And your Lord creates what He wills and chooses; not for them was the choice. Exalted is Allah and high above what they associate with Him.
[Al-Qasas 28:68]
.
Moreover, the rising of the sun from the west is like the alteration of the system of this universe from its origin, as came in many noble verses:
(1) When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness] (2) And when the stars fall, dispersing, (3) And when the mountains are removed
[At-Takwir 81:1-3]
. All of this is an indication that the Lord of the worlds will deal with this organized universe in a way that changes in this universe whatever He wills of change, as He said:
[It will be] on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth, and the heavens [as well], and all creatures will come out before Allah, the One, the Prevailing.
[Ibrahim 14:48]
. So among the earliest indications of this radical change is the rising of the sun from the west. The One who causes it to rise every day from the east is not incapable of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) causing it to rise from the west, as a sign that this worldly life has ended. Therefore, the previous description came that the day the sun rises:
no soul will benefit from its faith as long as it had not believed before
[Al-An'am 6:158]
. This is the first of the conditions of the Hour, which the scholars have agreed to call the major conditions of the Hour.
So the Messenger (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him) says here:
Hasten to perform six deeds before: the first of them is the rising of the sun from the west
. That is because the matter at that time is serious. If the sinful Muslim does not repent before its rising, his repentance will not benefit him. If the disbeliever does not repent from his disbelief, his repentance will not benefit him in this way. So here, it is obligatory to hasten to repent from evil deeds, and even more so, it is obligatory for disbelievers and hypocrites to hasten to return to their Lord and believe in their Islam.
the rising of the sun from the west, the smoke
Sahih Muslim 2947a
. The smoke is also among the signs of the Hour. But we must note two things here. The first thing: that nothing significant has come in the authentic Sunnah regarding the time of this smoke, which is among the signs of the Hour. But it appears that it is a smoke that encompasses all people; meaning, as if we imagine a suffocating gas from those gases that the disbelievers today display by multiplying them to terrorize their enemies, and they may imagine that if some bombs were thrown from them, they would destroy the crops and offspring. So this smoke will be from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and not through any human being, like the rising of the sun from the west. So it appears that this smoke will be general and comprehensive for the people of the earth, but Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will treat the believers with a special treatment, like how He treats them on the day He permits the establishment of the Hour for the people of the earth. And it has come in the authentic hadiths that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
The last hour will come only when people are wicked.
