Tafsir of Surat Taha

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Allah the Exalted said:
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
[Taha: 124], what is the interpretation of this verse? May Allah reward you all with good?

Answer: Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says:
(123) [Allah] said, "Descend from Paradise - all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter]. (124) And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
[Taha: 123, 124]. In the first verse, Allah the Exalted informed that whoever follows the Qur'an and acts upon it, He, Glorified and Exalted is He, has guaranteed for him that he will not go astray in this world, nor will he be wretched in the Hereafter.
And in the second verse, that whoever turns away from the Qur'an and does not act upon it,For indeed, Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, will punish him with two punishments:

The first: he will be in a straitened livelihood. This has been interpreted as the punishment of the grave; because he will be punished in his grave. It may also refer to the livelihood in this worldly life, and in the grave as well, so the verse is general,And the conclusion: that Allah threatened him that he will live a bad life full
of dangers, hardships, and difficulties as a recompense for his turning away from the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic; because he left the guidance and fell into misguidance and fell into distress.

And the second punishment: That Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind; because he was blind to the Book of Allah in this world, so Allah punished him with blindness in the Hereafter.
(125) He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?" (126) [Allah] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
[Taha: 125, 126]. So if he is blind to the Book of Allah in this world by not paying attention to it, not looking into it, and not acting upon it, he will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection in this hideous form - may Allah protect us from it -And this is like His saying, the Exalted:
(36) And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion. (37) And indeed, the devils avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided (38) Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "Oh, I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west - how wretched a companion." (39) And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment. (40) Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muhammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?
[Al-Zukhruf: 36-40].

In conclusion: That Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, threatened whoever turns away from His Book and does not act upon it in this worldly life that He will punish him with an immediate punishment in his worldly life, and a delayed punishment with the punishment of the grave - may Allah protect us from it - and in the gathering, and Allah the Exalted knows best.
