Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Ta-Ha. We did not send down the Qur'an to you so that you would be distressed."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the saying of Allah the Exalted
Ta-Ha طه
, it is known that it is a Ta and a Ha, meaning two alphabetic letters. Do they have a meaning? If we look at the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He,
Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur'an
[Az-Zukhruf 43:3]
, and His saying
Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an
[Yusuf 12:2]
, and His saying
(193) The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down (194) Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners - (195) In a clear Arabic language.
[Ash-Shu'ara 26:193-195]
, and His saying, Exalted is He,
And thus We have revealed it as an Arabic legislation
[Ar-Ra'd 13:37]
, it becomes clear to us that these alphabetic letters do not have a meaning in themselves; they do not have a meaning in themselves. Why? Because these alphabetic letters do not have a meaning in the Arabic language, and the Qur'an was revealed in what? In the language of the Arabs. When the Arabs say Alif, Ba, Ta, Tha, it has no meaning, but they are letters from which people's speech is composed. So it is as if Allah, Mighty and Majestic, challenged these deniers of the Qur'an and said: This Qur'an that you deny has not come with anything new from your speech; rather, it is from your speech. For this reason, you hardly find a Surah that begins with these alphabetic letters without the Qur'an mentioning Alif, Lam, Mim after it. Read al-Baqarah?
The student:
This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah -
[Al-Baqarah 2:2]
.

The Shaykh : Well done, may Allah reward you.
This is the Book about which there is no doubt
[Al-Baqarah 2:2]
Surah Al-Imran, read?
The student:
Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence
[Al-Baqarah 2:255]
.

The Shaykh : Just this?
The student:
(2) Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. (3) He has sent down upon you, [O Muhammad], the Book
[Ali 'Imran 3:2-3]
.

The Shaykh : "The Book was revealed to you." Alif, Lam, Mim, Sad. "A Book revealed to you." The end of Surah Yunus. Alif, Lam, Ra.
The student:
Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the wise Book
[Yunus 10:1]
.

The Shaykh : Surah Hud, please go ahead.
The student:
Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book whose verses are perfected and then presented in detail from [one who is] Wise and Acquainted.
[Hud 11:1]
.

The Shaykh : Well done, may Allah reward you. Surah Yusuf. Alif, Lam, Ra. Yes.
The student:
(1) Alif, Lam, Meem. (2) These are verses of the wise Book,
[Luqman 31:1-2]
.

The Shaykh : No, Alif, Lam, Ra. Yusuf.
The student:
These are the verses of the clear Book.
[Yusuf 12:1]
.

The Shaykh : Well done. Surah Ar-Ra'd. Up to here, to the extent of your knowledge.
Alif, Lam, Meem, Ra. These are the verses of the Book; and what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth
[Ar-Ra'd 13:1]
And so it is with the rest of the Surahs. Therefore, the beginning of the Surahs with these alphabetic letters has a great significance, which is that the Qur'an that has baffled you, O Arabs, has not come with anything new from the letters with which you used to communicate. And what I mentioned regarding the significance of these letters is what Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and others from the scholars of knowledge mentioned. If you were asked, "What is the meaning of Ta-Ha?" What would you say? You would say it has no meaning in the Arabic language; rather, it is alphabetic letters by which it is inferred that the Arabs are incapable of producing the like of the Qur'an.
As for the one who says that Ta-Ha is one of the names of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he has no evidence for this. He has spoken of what he does not know. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not have Ta-Ha among his names. If he says, "Does not Allah say
(1) Ta, Ha. (2) We have not sent down to you the Qur'an that you be distressed
[Taha 20:1-2]
'We did not send down to you,' meaning O Ta-Ha?" We say: After that, say his name is Ya-Sin, because Allah said
(1) Ya, Seen. (2) By the wise Qur'an. (3) Indeed you, [O Muhammad], are from among the messengers,
[Ya-Sin 36:1-3]
. Say his name is N, because Allah said
(1) Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (2) You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.
[Al-Qalam 68:1-2]
. Say his name is Alif, Lam, Mim, Sad, because Allah said
(1) Alif, Lam, Meem, Sad. (2) [This is] a Book revealed to you
[Al-A'raf 7:1-2]
. And no one can say that. And I tell you, O brothers, all the names of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are derived from great meanings. All of them are derived. Muhammad is from praise, Ahmad is from praise, Al-Haashir is from gathering, Al-Aaqib is from following, meaning he follows the prophets; he is the last of them, and so on. All the names of the Messenger are derived from great and noble meanings. And so are the names of the Qur'an, and so are the names of the Lord, Mighty and Majestic. They are all derived from noble and great meanings. You will not find a static name among them. And the names of people do not indicate the meaning from which they were derived. You name your son Khalid, and is he immortal?
The student: No.

The Shaykh : Why? He is not immortal. Why is he not immortal? Because he will die.
And We did not grant to any man before you eternity [on earth]; so if you die - would they be eternal?
[Al-Anbya 21:34]
You name him Muhammad, and he may be one of the worst of people in character. You name him Abdullah, and he may be one of the most sinful of the servants of Allah. But these three: the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, the second is the Qur'an, and the third is the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); their names indicate great meanings.
We have not sent down to you the Qur'an that you be distressed
[Taha 20:2]
We have not sent down to you the Qur'an
[Taha 20:2]
This is what is before us. We ask Allah to make us and you among those who recite it with its proper recitation. This great Qur'an, as Allah described it. He said:
But this is an honored Qur'an
[Al-Buruj 85:21]
And the great Qur'an والقرآن العظيم
Indeed, it is a noble Qur'an
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:77]
Allah described it with great descriptions.
sent down to you the Qur'an that you be distressed
[Taha 20:2]
That is, for the sake of distress? No. Whether you make the Lam for causation or for the outcome, it is negated. Allah did not send it down so that he would be distressed, and it is not that its outcome would be distress forever. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent it down for guidance, clarification, and happiness in this world and the Hereafter. And its outcome is what? Happiness in this world and the Hereafter. When the Muslim community held fast to the Qur'an, it attained elevation and prominence over all nations. And when it lagged behind, its victory lagged behind. So for what did Allah send it down? Listen, what?
