Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The meaning of the hadith
Every deed of the son of Adam is for him except fasting

Question: In the Quasi-Divine Hadith, Allah the Exalted said:
Every good deed of Adam's son is for him except fasting; it is for Me. and I shall reward (the fasting person) for it.كل عمل ابن آدم له إلا الصوم فإنه لي وأنا أجزي به
Sahih al-Bukhari 5927
. I hope you will explain this hadith for us, and why fasting was singled out with this distinction? Please inform us, may Allah bless you.

Answer: This is a great and authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in what he narrates from his Lord, Mighty and Majestic,That He said:
Every good deed of Adam's son is for him except fasting; it is for Me. and I shall reward (the fasting person) for it.كل عمل ابن آدم له إلا الصوم فإنه لي وأنا أجزي به
Sahih al-Bukhari 5927
. This hadith contains the virtue of fasting and its excellence among all other deeds, and that Allah has singled it out for Himself among the deeds of the servant. This is an honor for fasting and a preference for it over other deeds. And the scholars of knowledge have answered regarding His saying, the Exalted:
the fast is for Me, so I will give the reward for itالصوم لي وأنا أجزي به
Sahih al-Bukhari 7538
with several answers:

Some of them said: The meaning of His saying, the Exalted:
the fast is for Me, so I will give the reward for itالصوم لي وأنا أجزي به
Sahih al-Bukhari 7538
, is that the deeds of the son of Adam may be subject to retribution between him and those who have been wronged. The wronged parties take retribution from him on the Day of Resurrection by taking some of his deeds and good deeds,As in the hadith:
That a man comes on the Day of Resurrection with righteous deeds like mountains, and he comes having insulted this one and struck this one, and eaten the wealth of this one, so some of his good deeds are taken for this one, and some for that one, until his good deeds are exhausted and nothing remains, then some of the sins of the wronged are taken and placed upon him, and he is thrown into the Fireبأن الرجل يأتي يوم القيامة بأعمال صالحة أمثال الجبال فيأتي وقد شتم هذا وضرب هذا، وأكل مال هذا، فيؤخذ لهذا من حسناته، ولهذا من حسناته، حتى إذا فنيت حسناته ولم يبق شيء يؤخذ من سيئات المظلومين وتطرح عليه، ويطرح بالنار
, except for fasting, for it is not taken from him on the Day of Resurrection, but rather it is stored
by Allah, Mighty and Majestic, for the doer to reward him with it,And this is the meaning of His saying:
Every good deed of Adam's son is for him except fasting; it is for Me. and I shall reward (the fasting person) for it.كل عمل ابن آدم له إلا الصوم فإنه لي وأنا أجزي به
Sahih al-Bukhari 5927
, meaning that the deeds of the children of Adam are subject to retribution and the creditors take them on the Day of Resurrection, if they were wronged, except for fasting, for Allah preserves it and the creditors do not have power over it, and it remains for its owner with Allah, Mighty and Majestic.

And it was said: The meaning of His saying, the Exalted:
Fasting is for Me and I will reward it for it, for he left his desire, his food, and his drink for My sakeالصوم لي وأنا أجزي به، إنه ترك شهوته وطعامه وشرابه من أجلي
is that fasting is an internal deed, which no one knows except Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He. It is a heartfelt intention, unlike other deeds, for they are apparent and people see them. As for fasting, it is a secret deed between the servant and his Lord, Mighty and Majestic. For this reason, he says:
Fasting is for Me and I will reward it for it, for he left his desire, his food, and his drink for My sakeالصوم لي وأنا أجزي به، إنه ترك شهوته وطعامه وشرابه من أجلي
. The fact that he left his food and drink for the sake of Allah is an internal deed and a hidden intention which no one knows except Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He. Unlike charity, for example, and prayer, and Hajj, and apparent deeds; people see these. As for fasting, no one sees it; because the meaning of fasting is not just leaving food and drink, or just leaving the apparent things that break the fast, but the meaning of fasting is that it is pure for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and a sincere intention for Allah, Mighty and Majestic. This is the meaning of fasting, and this is not known except by Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He;And this is the meaning of His saying, the Exalted:
the fast is for Me, so I will give the reward for itالصوم لي وأنا أجزي به
Sahih al-Bukhari 7538
،And He explained it by His saying:
He leaves his desires and his food and drink for My sake.إنه ترك شهوته وطعامه وشرابه من أجلي
Muwatta Malik 18:64
.

And some of the scholars say: The meaning of His saying, the Exalted:
the fast is for Me, so I will give the reward for itالصوم لي وأنا أجزي به
Sahih al-Bukhari 7538
is that no shirk (associating partners with Allah) enters into fasting, unlike other deeds, for the polytheists used to
offer them to their deities, such as slaughtering and vows, and other types of worship, as well as supplication, fear, and hope. Many of the polytheists used to draw near to their idols and deities with these, unlike fasting. It is not mentioned that the polytheists used to fast for their idols and deities. Fasting is specific to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. So this is the meaning of His saying:
the fast is for Me, so I will give the reward for itالصوم لي وأنا أجزي به
Sahih al-Bukhari 7538
, meaning that no shirk (associating partners with Allah) enters into it, and the polytheists did not draw near to their idols with it. Rather, one draws near to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, with fasting.
