[The Meaning of the Word (Al-Ummi)]
What is the meaning of the word (al-ummi) who does not read or write, does it carry a meaning other than this in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messengerهُوَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ فِي الْأُمِّيِّينَ رَسُولاً
[Al-Jumu'ah: 2] ?

Al-Ummi: It is the one who does not read or write, but (al-ummi) according to the jurists: is the one who does not recite al-Fatihah well, so even if he reads and writes but does not recite al-Fatihah well, he is al-ummi,But in its original meaning in the Arabic language: It is the one who does not read or write,Named after the mother, meaning: As if he were born today, having just come out of his mother's womb.

And as for His saying (the Exalted):
It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messengerهُوَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ فِي الْأُمِّيِّينَ رَسُولاً
[Al-Jumu'ah: 2] He is a Messenger after he was sent.

The questioner: Are (al-ummiyyin) here those who do not read or write? The Shaykh: By that is meant: the Arabs in general, the Arabs do not know reading or writing.
