Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (So taste; We will not increase you except punishment)
Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Naba: 30], this command is for humiliation and reprimand,Meaning: It is said to the people of the Fire: Taste the punishment, as a humiliation and reprimand. We will not increase you except punishment, and We will not lighten it for you. Rather, We will not even leave you in your current state. We will not increase you except in the intensity, duration, and type of the punishment. And you have read another verse in which they say to the keepers of Hell: [Ghafir: 49],Consider this word from several angles: First: that they did not ask Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, but rather they asked the keepers of Hell to pray for them. Why?Because Allah said to them: [Al-Mu'minun: 108], so they saw themselves as not worthy to ask Allah and call upon Him directly, but only through an intermediary.
Second: That they said: [Ghafir: 49] and they did not say: Call upon our Lord; because their faces and hearts are unable to speak or mention the attribution of Allah’s lordship to them,Meaning: by saying our Lord. They have so much shame and disgrace that they see themselves as not worthy of the attribution of Allah’s lordship to them, so they said: (Your Lord).
Third: That they did not say: Remove the punishment from us,Rather, they said: or lighten it; because they are despairing—may Allah protect us—despairing that it will be removed from them.
Fourth: Then look, also,Did they say: Will the punishment be lightened for us permanently? They said: [Ghafir: 49] for just one day. It becomes clear to you, if you visualize this state, what they are in of punishment, humiliation, and servitude: [Al-Shura: 45] May Allah protect us and you from it.
Then Allah the Mighty and Majestic mentioned what is for the righteous of bliss; because the Qur'an is paired. When it mentions punishment, it mentions reward; when it mentions reward, it mentions punishment; when it mentions the people of good, it mentions the people of evil; and when it mentions the truth, it mentions falsehood. It is paired so that the person’s journey to his Lord is between fear and hope; because if hope predominates in him, he falls into security from the plot of Allah, and if fear predominates in him, he falls into despair of the mercy of Allah. Both are among the major sins. Both are evil: neither security from the plot of Allah, nor despair of the mercy of Allah. Therefore, you find the Qur'an coming with this and that, so that souls do not become bored of mentioning one state and elaborating on it without its counterpart. This is part of the eloquence of the Noble Qur'an.
Allah the Exalted said:
"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."
Supplicate your Lord to lighten for us a day from the punishment."
He will say, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me.
Second: That they said:
Call upon your Lord
Third: That they did not say: Remove the punishment from us,Rather, they said: or lighten it; because they are despairing—may Allah protect us—despairing that it will be removed from them.
Fourth: Then look, also,Did they say: Will the punishment be lightened for us permanently? They said:
a day from the punishment."
And you will see them being exposed to the Fire, humbled from humiliation, looking from [behind] a covert glance.
Then Allah the Mighty and Majestic mentioned what is for the righteous of bliss; because the Qur'an is paired.
