Ruling on separating the two prayers for one who intends to combine them

His Eminence the Shaykh: In one of the mosques, on the last Friday, it rained in the city of Riyadh. We prayed Maghrib, and after the prayer the imam stood up, then returned a second time and called the iqamah for the Isha' prayer, intending to combine them, so we combined them. What is the ruling on this combination?
What is known among most scholars is that if the combination is a combination by bringing forward, then the two prayers must be consecutive. However, consecutiveness is not invalidated by a slight movement or a brief sitting.
And some scholars said: If the combination is permissible, there is no harm in separating the two prayers, even if the first is prayed at the beginning of its time and the second at the end of its time.
And this second opinion was chosen by the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him),And he said: The combination does not mean joining the two prayers such that the second follows immediately after the first, but rather joining the two times so that they become one time. So whenever the cause for combination, such as travel, rain, or illness, is present, there is no harm for you to pray the first at the beginning of the time and the second at the end of the time. He holds, may Allah have mercy on him, that the combination is joining the two times to each other, not joining the two prayers to each other.
So, based on this, we say: The incident that occurred, where the imam, after he had gone out and seen the rain, returned and combined,We say: This is permissible and there is no harm in it, even if the rain did not appear to him until after the prayer; it does not matter. Because the condition of intending the combination before the takbir of ihram in the first prayer is weak. The correct view is that it is not a condition; rather, if the rain occurs after he has said the taslim from Maghrib, he may combine.
