Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (Then you will be asked on that Day about the enjoyment)
Allah the Exalted said: [At-Takathur:8] This means: Then, in that great standing, you will be asked about the enjoyment. And the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed regarding His saying: [At-Takathur:8] Is the intended meaning the disbeliever, or is the intended meaning the believer and the disbeliever? And the correct view is: The intended meaning is the believer and the disbeliever; each one is asked about the enjoyment. However, the disbeliever is asked a question of rebuke and reproof, while the believer is asked a question of reminder. And the evidence that it is general: What happened in the story of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr, and 'Umar, where they went out one day from hunger, and they went to the orchard of a man known as Abu al-Haytham ibn al-Tayhan, and they asked for permission to enter. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Peace be upon you" — and his wife was behind the door — so she returned the greeting and cursed them with their mother and father. So they asked about her husband, and she said: He has gone to sweeten the water, meaning: to bring sweet, good water. So they sat, and then the man came and was greatly pleased with them. And he said: He said, "There is no one who is more generous to guests than I am today." Then he cut a cluster of dates from the palm tree and brought it and threw it before them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not harvest it?"
Meaning: "I harvested it, and you know that harvesting means taking only the fresh dates."So he said: "I intended, O Messenger of Allah, for there to be before you the dry dates, the fresh dates, and the unripe dates — because the cluster includes all three — so they ate, then they called for water and drank. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Good water, good food, and good shade. (Then you will be asked on that Day about the enjoyment)." This is evidence that both the believer and the disbeliever are asked, but the question differs. The question for the believer is a reminder of the favor of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) upon him, so that he rejoices and knows that the One who favored him in this world is more generous to favor him in the Hereafter.Meaning: That if He is generous to him in this world, He will be generous to them with His favor in the Hereafter. As for the disbeliever, it is a question of rebuke and warning.
We ask Allah the Exalted to employ us and you in His obedience, and to make what He has provided us with a means to His obedience. Indeed, He is capable of all things.
Allah the Exalted said:
Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure.
ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِThen you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure.
لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِMeaning: "I harvested it, and you know that harvesting means taking only the fresh dates."So he said: "I intended, O Messenger of Allah, for there to be before you the dry dates, the fresh dates, and the unripe dates — because the cluster includes all three — so they ate, then they called for water and drank. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Good water, good food, and good shade.
