Ruling on Restricting Oneself to the Five Pillars

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Some of the brothers say: If a person performs the five pillars of Islam, he becomes a Muslim, even if he does not practice the Prophetic Sunnah, such as trimming the mustache and letting the beard grow, and shortening the garment. However, he is not upright. Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good?
This is correct.
That if a person performs the five pillars of Islam, he is a Muslim, even if he shaves his beard or lets his garment hang below the ankles; he is a Muslim, indeed he is a believer, but his faith is deficient due to his commission of this sin and his persistence in it;Because if you said: He is not a Muslim; you have expelled him from Islam, and expelling someone from Islam is not a light matter. It is not permissible for us to expel a person from Islam except with evidence from the Book and the Sunnah, or the consensus of the Ummah; because expelling someone from Islam is a ruling among the rulings of Allah, and it entails great issues. So if it is not permissible for us to say: This is forbidden except with evidence, or this is obligatory except with evidence,Then it is not permissible for us to say: That this is disbelief except with evidence,And we do not say: That this is a disbeliever except with evidence. The Islamic Ummah was not divided except by such statements based on delusion. So why did the Khawarij rebel against the Imams and corrupt many things in the Ummah? Because they declared major sins to be disbelief. And they say: Whoever commits a major sin is a disbeliever who will remain in the Fire forever, and he must be fought. Whoever reads history knows the great harms that occurred when they appeared.

In conclusion: That disbelief is not a light matter. A person may commit many sins but remain a believer, though he is a believer with deficient faith. If I asked you, what is the greatest aggression against the children of Adam? The answer would be: Killing. Killing is greater than taking wealth, and yet Allah the Exalted made the killer a brother to the one killed, so He the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, prescribed for you is legal retribution for those murdered - the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But whoever overlooks from his brother anything, then there should be a suitableيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِصَاصُ فِي الْقَتْلَى الْحُرُّ بِالْحُرِّ وَالْعَبْدُ بِالْعَبْدِ وَالْأُنْثَى بِالْأُنْثَى فَمَنْ عُفِيَ لَهُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ شَيْءٌ فَاتِّبَاعٌ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
[al-Baqarah: 178] (from) meaning from his killed brother
But whoever overlooks from his brotherفَمَنْ عُفِيَ لَهُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ
[al-Baqarah: 178] that is, from the blood of his brother:
anything, then there should be a suitable follow-upشَيْءٌ فَاتِّبَاعٌ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
[al-Baqarah: 178] .

And He the Exalted said regarding the two factions of believers who fought each other:
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the twoوَإِنْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اقْتَتَلُوا فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَهُمَا
[al-Hujurat: 9] until He said:
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothersإِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَ أَخَوَيْكُمْ
[al-Hujurat: 10] So you see now that the killer does not exit from faith, and the one who fights the believers does not exit from faith. So how about if he shaves his beard,Or let his garment hang! We say: He is a Muslim, a believer; but his faith is deficient due to the sins he has.
