Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (Indeed, to Us is their return)
Is there a lesser punishment? We say: Yes.
There is a lesser punishment in this world. The one who turns away and rejects may be afflicted with illnesses in his body, his mind, his family, his wealth, and his society. All of this is a lesser punishment compared to the punishment of the Fire. However, the greater punishment will only be on the Day of Resurrection. Therefore, he said after that:
(25) Indeed, to Us is their return. (26) Then indeed, upon Us is their account.إِنَّ إِلَيْنَا إِيَابَهُمْ * ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُمْ
[Al-Ghashiyah: 25-26] (To Us is their return) meaning: their return. So the return to Allah, no matter how much a person flees, he will return to his Lord, Mighty and Majestic. Even if his life is prolonged, he will return to Allah. For this reason, Allah the Exalted said:
O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it.يَا أَيُّهَا الْأِنْسَانُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَى رَبِّكَ كَدْحاً فَمُلاقِيهِ
[Al-Inshiqaq: 6] So prepare, my brother, for this meeting; for you will meet your Lord. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (None of you is there but that his Lord will speak to him, and there will be no interpreter between him and Him) directly, without a translator. Allah will speak to him on the Day of Resurrection. (Then he will look to his right and see nothing but what he has done, and he will look to his left -on the left side- and see nothing but what he has done, and he will look straight ahead and see nothing but the Fire straight ahead of him. So fear the Fire, even if it is only with half a date) Every one of us will be alone with his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, on the Day of Resurrection. He will confront him with his sins, saying: You did such and such on such and such a day, until he acknowledges and confesses. So when he acknowledges and confesses, Allah the Exalted says: (I concealed it from you in the world, and I forgive it for you today) How many sins Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has concealed, and how many sins we have committed that no one knew about, but Allah, the Exalted, knew about them. So our stance regarding these sins is that we seek forgiveness from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and that we increase in good deeds that expiate evil deeds, until we meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in a state that pleases Him, Blessed and Exalted is He.
