Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (And Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley)]
Then Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Fajr: 9] Thamud: They are the people of Salih,And their dwellings are well known now, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Hijr: 80] Allah mentioned that Thamud were in the land of al-Hijr, which is well known. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed through it on his way to Tabuk and hastened, covering his head, (peace and blessings be upon him),He said: (Do not enter upon these people who were punished except that you be weeping, lest what befell them befall you) These people were given strength by Allah until they were able to split the mountains, and they would split the pebbles and large rocks and make houses from them,And for this he said:[Al-Fajr 89:9] meaning: the valley of Thamud, which is well known. These people—likewise— Allah did to them what He did of punishment and retribution, when it was said to them: [Hud: 65] Then, after the three days, the earthquake and the tremor took them, so they became in their homes prostrate.
So it is obligatory upon us to take a lesson from the state of these disbelievers, whose end was destruction and ruin. And let it be known that this Ummah will not be destroyed by the same general punishment that destroyed the previous nations. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) asked Allah the Exalted not to destroy them with a general punishment. However, this Ummah may be destroyed by Allah making their wrath among them, so that wars and fighting occur between them, and some of them are destroyed by the hands of others, not by something descending from the sky as Allah did with the previous nations.
Therefore, it is obligatory upon us to beware of trials, both what is apparent and what is hidden, and to stay away from everything that incites people against one another. We must always adhere to calmness and stay away from gossip and excessive questioning, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade such things. How many a single word has done what the drawn swords do! So it is obligatory to beware of trials and to be a united and loving Ummah, where each of us must excuse his brother when he sees from him what he dislikes.
We ask Allah to make us all successful in what is good and righteous, and to gather our hearts upon His obedience.
Then Allah the Exalted said:
And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِAnd certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers.
وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَابُ الْحِجْرِ الْمُرْسَلِينَwho carved out the rocks in the valley?
جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِEnjoy yourselves in your homes for three days
