Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with 'Ad" to "and Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley" from Surat al-Fajr.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
This is the sixty-third session, or rather this is the sixty-third meeting of the meetings that take place every Thursday of every week, and this Thursday is the twenty-eighth of the month of Muharram in the year 1415.
We begin this meeting with what we have been accustomed to, which is the exegesis of some of the noble verses of Allah, where our discussion has reached the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
Is there in that an oath for one of understanding?
.
Allah the Exalted said:
(6) Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad - (7) [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,
[Al-Fajr 89:6-7]
The address here is to everyone to whom this noble Book is directed, which is all of humanity, and even the jinn: Have you not seen, O addressed one:
how your Lord dealt with 'Aad - (7) [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,
[Al-Fajr 89:6-7]
meaning: what He did to them.
And 'Ad is a known tribe in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Allah the Exalted sent Hud (peace be upon him) to them, and he conveyed the message to them, but they were arrogant and transgressed and said: Who is stronger than us in power? Allah the Exalted said:
Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.
[Fussilat 41:15]
So they boasted of their strength, but Allah made it clear that they are weak in the face of the power of Allah. For this reason He said:
Did they not consider that Allah who created them
[Fussilat 41:15]
and He did not say: that Allah is stronger than them in power, but rather He said:
who created them الَّذِي خَلَقَهُمْ
to make clear their weakness and that He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), is stronger than them, because the Creator is stronger than the created:
that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs. (16) So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace
[Fussilat 41:15-16]
Yes, complete.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, indeed
to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.
[Fussilat 41:16]
.
Here He says:
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad -
[Al-Fajr 89:6]
The One who dealt with them is that He sent upon them the barren wind:
Which Allah imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.
[Al-Haqqah 69:7]
And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellings
[Al-Ahqaf 46:25]
And this interrogation by which Allah drew attention to what He did to these people is intended for taking a lesson, meaning: take a lesson, O you who deny the Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), from these people, how they were made to taste this punishment, and Allah the Exalted said:
And Allah 's punishment is not from the wrongdoers [very] far.
[Hud 11:83]
.
And His saying:
Iram
This is a description of the tribe, and it was said: it is the name of the village, and other things have been said. So whether it is the name of the tribe or the name of the village, Allah the Exalted dealt with them with a severe dealing, even though they were strong.
And His saying:
(7) [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, (8) The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
[Al-Fajr 89:7-8]
means the owners of the pillars, meaning: the strong buildings:
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
[Al-Fajr 89:8]
He did not create the like of them, meaning: He did not make the like of them in the lands, because they are strong and well-constructed. And this is what deluded them, and they said: Who is stronger than us in power? And in His saying, the Exalted:
had never been created in the land?
[Al-Fajr 89:8]
even though the one who made them is the human being, is evidence that the human being may be described as creating, and it is said: he created such and such. From this is the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding the image-makers:
and will be told: 'Give life to that which you have created.'
Sunan Ibn Majah 2151Sahih (Darussalam)
But the creation attributed to humans, or rather the creation attributed to the created, is not the creation attributed to Allah. The creation attributed to Allah is bringing into existence after non-existence, and transforming and changing. As for the creation attributed to other than Allah, it is merely transforming and changing.
And I give you an example: This door is made of wood. Who created the wood? Allah. It is not possible for humans to create it. But humans can transform logs of wood and trunks of wood into doors, cabinets, and the like. So the creation attributed to the created is not the creation attributed to the Creator. What is the difference? Answer? The creation attributed to the Creator is bringing into existence from non-existence, bringing into existence from non-existence, and this no one can do. And what is attributed to the created is changing and transforming, transforming a thing from one attribute to another. As for changing the essences, meaning: making gold into silver, or silver into iron, or the like, this is impossible and cannot be done except by Allah alone, who has no partner.
Then He said:
And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
[Al-Fajr 89:9]
Thamud: they are the people of Salih, and their dwellings are known now, as He, the Exalted, said: Yes
And certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers.
[Al-Hijr 15:80]
In Surat al-Hijr, Allah mentioned that Thamud were in the land of al-Hijr, which is known. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) passed by it on his way to Tabuk, and he hastened and covered his head (peace and blessings be upon him), and said:
Do not enter but weepingly (the habitations) of these people who had been punished by (Allah), and in case you do not feel inclined to weep, then do not enter (these habitations) that you may not meet the same calamity as had fallen to their lot.
Sahih Muslim 2980a
These people were given strength by Allah until they were piercing the mountains, and the pebbles and great rocks, they were piercing them and making houses from them. For this reason He said:
who carved out the rocks in the valley?
[Al-Fajr 89:9]
meaning: the valley of Thamud, which is known. Allah also did to these people what He did of punishment and severe dealing, where it was said to them:
Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days
[Hud 11:65]
Then after the three days, the scream and the earthquake took them, so they became in their homes prostrate.
So it is upon us, O brothers, to take a lesson from the state of these deniers, whose end was destruction and ruin. And let it be known that this Ummah will not be destroyed by the general punishment by which the previous nations were destroyed, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) asked Allah the Exalted not to destroy them by a general year of punishment. But this Ummah may be destroyed by Allah making their wrath among them, so wars and fighting occur between them, and the destruction of some of them is at the hands of some of them, not by something that descends from the sky as Allah the Exalted did to the previous nations.
For this reason, it is obligatory upon us to be cautious, to be cautious of the trials, whether apparent or hidden, and to stay away from everything that incites people against one another, and to always adhere to calmness, and to stay away from gossip and excessive questioning, for that is from what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade. And how many a single word has done what the drawn swords do. So the obligatory thing is to be cautious of the trials, and that we be a united and loving Ummah, where each one of us requires the excuse of his brother if he sees from him what he dislikes.
We ask Allah to make us all successful in what is good and righteous, and to gather our hearts upon His obedience.
And now to the time for questions, and our custom is that there is one question, and that there is no comment on the question so that the others are not deprived of asking. Yes.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : What? Meaning the visitors take precedence over. Yes.

The questioner : And regarding the questions...

The Shaykh : Yes, this is the speech of the brother Musa, he says that those coming from outside Unaizah are more deserving than those in Unaizah, what do you say?

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Meaning we agree to this, so we begin with those coming from outside Unaizah, and we do not allow anyone from the people of Unaizah to ask unless there is some time remaining, and there is no anger, this is self-sacrifice, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says:
And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation.
[Al-Hashr 59:9]
