The scholars' disagreement on whether the wife of a son through breastfeeding is like the wife of a son through blood relation

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A man breastfed from his brother's wife a complete breastfeeding. Is it permissible for the brother by blood—the father by breastfeeding—to greet his brother's wife and his son by breastfeeding?

Meaning: Is the wife of a son through breastfeeding like the wife of a son through blood relation? It is known that the wife of a son through blood relation is a mahram to her father-in-law, but regarding the wife of a son through breastfeeding, even if his father by breastfeeding is his brother, there is disagreement among the scholars. Most scholars hold that the wife of a son through breastfeeding is like the wife of a son through blood relation,Meaning: that she is a mahram to her father by breastfeeding, and she may uncover herself before him because he is a mahram. However, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) chose the view that she is not a mahram. Each of them cited the same hadith as evidence,Those who said: that the wife of a son through breastfeeding is like the wife of a son through blood relation. They said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "What is forbidden by blood relation is forbidden by breastfeeding". And Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him), who said that the wife of a son through breastfeeding is not like the wife of a son through blood relation, and that she is not a mahram to her father by breastfeeding, and that she must observe hijab from him, and it is not permissible for him to be alone with her,Cited as evidence the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "What is forbidden by blood relation is forbidden by breastfeeding". And he cited the saying of Allah the Exalted:
the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loinsوَحَلائِلُ أَبْنَائِكُمُ الَّذِينَ مِنْ أَصْلابِكُمْ
[Al-Nisa: 23]. Which of the two is closer in your view? The questioner: Blood relation.

The Shaykh: How can it be closer when the wife of his son by blood relation is forbidden? Therefore: The wife of a son through breastfeeding is forbidden ("What is forbidden by blood relation is forbidden by breastfeeding").

We ask: Is the wife of a son forbidden to her father by blood relation, or is she forbidden by affinity? By affinity. There is no blood relation between him and her father, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is forbidden by blood relation is forbidden by breastfeeding". And the wife of your son is not forbidden to you by blood relation, but she is forbidden to you by affinity; because there is no blood relation between you and her. For this reason, the view of Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) is, in my opinion, the stronger position, and that the wife of a son through breastfeeding is not a mahram. And the wife of a son through blood relation is not a mahram by blood relation. As for the verse cited by Shaykh al-Islam
the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loinsوَحَلائِلُ أَبْنَائِكُمُ الَّذِينَ مِنْ أَصْلابِكُمْ
[Al-Nisa: 23], the majority of scholars who say that the wife of a son through breastfeeding is like the wife of a son through blood relation say: This verse was qualified as a precaution against the adopted son,So we say: that the adopted son is not a son, so one must be cautious regarding him. He is not included in sonship in any way, until a qualifier comes that excludes him. So the correct view, in my opinion, is what Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) held.
