A man who was breastfed by his brother's wife five times: Is it permissible for the father through breastfeeding to shake hands with his brother's wife and his son through breastfeeding?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : A man who was breastfed by his brother's wife with a breastfeeding that establishes prohibition, five breastfeedings that establish prohibition. Is it permissible for the brother by blood—the father through breastfeeding—to greet the wife of this breastfed brother?

The Shaykh : how

The questioner : A man who was breastfed

The Shaykh : Yes, indeed

The questioner : by his brother's wife

The Shaykh : Yes, a complete breastfeeding

The questioner : A complete breastfeeding

The Shaykh : Yes

The questioner : that establishes prohibition, and this breastfed man got married. Is it permissible for the brother by blood—the father through breastfeeding—to greet his brother's wife and his son through breastfeeding?

The Shaykh : Yes, meaning: he is asking whether the wife of the son through breastfeeding is like the wife of the son by blood?

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : It is ... known that the wife of the son by blood is a mahram to her father, is that not so? Now, the wife of the son through breastfeeding, even if his father through breastfeeding is his brother, there is disagreement among the scholars regarding this. The majority of scholars hold that the wife of the son through breastfeeding is like the wife of the son by blood, meaning that she is a mahram to her father through breastfeeding, and she may uncover herself before him because he is a mahram. The Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) chose the view that she is not a mahram. Each side cited the same hadith as evidence. Those who said that the wife of the son through breastfeeding is like the wife of the son by blood said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful. يحرم من الرضاع ما يحرم من النسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam)
And the Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him), who said that the wife of the son through breastfeeding is not like the wife of the son by blood, and that she is not a mahram to her father through breastfeeding, and that she must observe hijab from him, and it is not permissible for him to be alone with her, cited the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful. يحرم من الرضاع ما يحرم من النسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam)
and cited the saying of Allah the Exalted:
the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loins وَحَلائِلُ أَبْنَائِكُمُ الَّذِينَ مِنْ أَصْلابِكُمْ
[An-Nisa 4:23]
Which of these is closer in your view?

The questioner : Blood relation.

The Shaykh : How can it be closer when the wife of his son by blood is forbidden? Therefore, the wife of the son through breastfeeding is forbidden
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful. يحرم من الرضاع ما يحرم من النسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam)
.

The questioner : ...
Now, let us look at what we have reached. We say: We ask: Is the wife of the son forbidden to her father by blood relation, or is she forbidden by affinity? By affinity. There is no blood relation between him and her father, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
on account of fosterage as one is Mahram on account of consanguinity يحرم من الرضاعة ما يحرم من النسب
Sahih Muslim 1445i
And the wife of your son is not forbidden to you by blood relation, but she is forbidden to you by affinity, because there is no blood relation between you and her. For this reason, the opinion of the Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) is, in my view, the stronger position, and that the wife of the son through breastfeeding, as well as the wife of the father through breastfeeding, is not a mahram. Now, as for the verse cited by the Shaykh as well,
the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loins وَحَلائِلُ أَبْنَائِكُمُ الَّذِينَ مِنْ أَصْلابِكُمْ
[An-Nisa 4:23]
the majority of scholars who say that the wife of the son through breastfeeding is like the wife of the son by blood say: This verse was qualified as a precaution against the adopted son. We say: The adopted son is not a son, so he is to be guarded against. He is not included in sonship in any way, until a qualification comes that excludes him. Therefore, the correct view in my opinion is what the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) held... The appointment between you and me, I look at it. Yes.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : how
