The ruling on the poet's saying: (All existence perishes except your love, O my homeland)]

His Eminence the Shaykh: What is your opinion of the verse in which the poet says:
All existence perishes except your love, O my homeland
And is one who recites this verse without intending its meaning considered an associate of partners with Allah or a disbeliever? Please inform us, may Allah guide you to what He loves and is pleased with.
"Existence" includes the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, because He is the Necessary Existent. Therefore, the implication of this word is very serious and constitutes disbelief. However, the one who says it may not know its meaning. Also, it is obligatory, O my brothers, that we not be nationalists or tribalists,Meaning: that we not be fanatical about our tribe or our homeland; because national fanaticism may gather under its banner the believer, the Muslim, the open sinner, the wicked, the disbeliever, the atheist, the secularist, the innovator, and the Sunni. A homeland encompasses all of these. If we focus only on nationality, this is undoubtedly dangerous; because if we focus on nationality, an innovator will come to a Sunni and say to him: You and I share in nationality; you have no superiority over me, nor do I have superiority over you. This is a dangerous principle in reality; and the correct approach is to focus on being believers.

As for the verse mentioned in the question: If the one who says it believes its meaning, he has committed disbelief. If he does not believe its implication but says it without knowing, we do not declare him a disbeliever; because he does not know its meaning. But we forbid him from this verse and explain—also—that fanaticism for the homeland and that the bond between us is nationality is not correct at all. The matter does not stand unless the bond between us is faith:
The believers are but brothersإِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ
[Al-Hujurat: 10] The verse was revealed in Madinah, and there were Jews in Madinah before the migration of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to it; yet they were not included in the verse, even though they were citizens. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) died while his armor was pledged to a Jew.
So this is a serious matter. The correct principle is that what unites us is Islam and faith, and by this we gain the Muslims in every place. As for the claim of some advocates of nationality based on the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to Makkah: (You are the most beloved of places to Allah) they have no proof in that;Because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say: You are the most beloved of lands to me,Rather He said: (You are the most beloved of places to Allah) And therefore he said: (And if not that your people had expelled me from you, I would not have left) The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say that for the sake of nationality, but because Makkah is the most beloved of places to Allah the Exalted, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) loves what Allah loves.
