Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (The month of Ramadan in which the Qur'an was revealed)
Allah the Exalted said: [al-Baqarah: 185] So Allah made fasting obligatory and abrogated feeding, but because the initial obligation of fasting might be difficult for people, they were encouraged to fast and given the choice between fasting and feeding. Then, when the obligation became settled in their hearts and their eyes were pleased with it, Allah made fasting obligatory upon them. For this reason, it is not permissible for a person to feed others while he is capable of fasting. If he is unable to fast, his inability is either permanent, in which case he must feed one poor person for every day, or it is temporary and he hopes for its removal, such as a person suffering from a chronic illness, in which case he waits until he recovers and then fasts;because of His saying, the Exalted: [al-Baqarah: 185] .
