The Ruling on Eating the Saqanqur

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
His Eminence the Shaykh: What is the ruling on eating what is called the saqanqur? The Shaykh: What is this saqanqur? The questioner: It is a creature found in the sand!
It appears to be one of the forbidden insects; because it is loathsome, and as the brother mentioned, it is a small creature that burrows into the sand. It has no known burrow; when a person pursues it, it burrows into the sand. For this reason, some of them call it: It is called the *dissaysah* because it burrows into the sand. This is among the forbidden things; but it must be known that in what Allah the Exalted has made lawful for us, there is sufficient provision without it.If someone were to say: What is the evidence for its prohibition? A person cannot bring evidence for the prohibition of this specific creature. So perhaps someone might say: The original ruling is permissibility. As Allah the Exalted said: (It is He who has created for you all that is on the earth) [Surat al-Baqarah: 29] It is said: From the standpoint of scrupulousness and avoiding doubtful matters, one should leave it and stick to what Allah has made lawful for you in a way that contains no doubt or ambiguity. We say: Instead of this, seek out the *dhab* and eat it; because the *dhab* is lawful.
