Ruling on hunting that which is within reach with a weapon and that which is not
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We heard a fatwa attributed to you, and we want to verify its accuracy: that it is not permissible to hunt the monitor lizard with a weapon because it is within reach?
As for the monitor lizard that is in your hand, you must slaughter it; because you are able to control it. As for the one that is free, you are not able to control it. If you are able to control it, it is not permissible except by slaughtering it. If you are not able to control it, it is permissible to hunt it with a rifle. If a camel runs away and you are not able to catch it, it is permissible to shoot and kill it by shooting. Or if it falls into a well and you are unable to descend to it to slaughter it, shoot it with a rifle. How much more so with the monitor lizard.
And if you hear something from me that you find objectionable, contact me; because often things are attributed to me and to other scholars that are not correct. Either they are pure lies, or the questioner asked and did not understand the answer, or he asked about a situation that did not occur, so I answered according to his question, or he intends to tarnish the reputation. Because attribution to scholars is either an error in the question, an error in understanding the answer, or an intention of harm. And none of this has ever occurred.
So if you hear from any scholar something that you find objectionable, contact him so that you may be certain.
