Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (And if they see a piece of the sky falling down)
Allah the Exalted said: [Surat al-Tur: 44] meaning: if the punishment had descended upon them,And *kisf* is the punishment, as they said: [Surat al-Shu'ara: 187] The word "khasf" means: cutting off the punishment. [At-Tur 52:44] This indicates that they consider themselves to be in the right and that they do not deserve the punishment, and that this descending "khasf" is merely cutting off the punishment; it is nothing but accumulated clouds. This is like the statement of the people of 'Ad when they saw the wind coming toward them: [Surat al-Ahqaf: 24] because these deniers—may Allah protect us from that—are obstinate; they consider themselves to be in the right and that they do not deserve the punishment,So when they saw the punishment, they said: This is an ordinary thing, and we will not fear it, nor will we be afraid of it.
