What is the authenticity of the hadith: “Satan comes to one of you during his prayer and blows into his backside, making him think that he has passed wind when he has not. If he finds this, he should not leave his prayer until he hears a sound or finds a smell”

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Welcome.

The questioner : How is your health?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah for the good. How are you?

The questioner: All right, may Allah be pleased with you, may Allah keep you safe.

The Shaykh : May Allah preserve you.

The questioner: O Shaykh, I have some questions about some hadiths, if you have time?

The Shaykh: Go ahead.

The questioner: There is a hadith from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Satan comes to one of you in Salat and blows air in his bottom, so he imagines that he has realised air yet he did not. So if he gets that feeling he should not leave his prayer unless he hears the sound (of the air) or smells its odour.
Bulugh al-Maram 83
.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner: Al-Bazzar narrated it, so I do not know how authentic this hadith is?

The Shaykh : The hadith is authentic.

The questioner : The hadith is authentic.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner: Did you verify it in the chain, because I searched for it and did not find it.

The Shaykh: This is in “Sahih al-Bukhari,” my brother.

The questioner: I mean, this, O Shaykh, was narrated by al-Bazzar.

The Shaykh: What do we have to do with al-Bazzar? What we have from al-Bukhari suffices us instead of al-Bazzar.

The questioner: I mean, the same text of the hadith was mentioned in al-Bukhari.

The Shaykh: Yes,
he should not cease praying unless he hears a sound or perceives a smell.
Sunan Abi Dawud 177Sahih (Al-Albani)
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh: I mean, this is in al-Bukhari.

The questioner: O Shaykh, there is an addition:
so he imagines that he has realised air yet he did not
Bulugh al-Maram 83
.

The Shaykh: We do not care about the addition; because its meaning is correct.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh: Because what does
he should not cease praying unless he hears a sound or perceives a smell.
Sunan Abi Dawud 177Sahih (Al-Albani)
mean? This is an act of Satan’s trickery with the back of the human being, deluding him that a nullifier has come out of him when there is no nullifier. And therefore, to cut off the root of Satan’s whispering to his enemy, the human being, he (peace be upon him) said to this person:
he should not cease praying unless he hears a sound or perceives a smell.
Sunan Abi Dawud 177Sahih (Al-Albani)
.

The questioner: All right, O Shaykh, this is related to the sound or the smell. Let us suppose that a person felt that something came out of him, but he did not hear a sound and did not find a smell.

The Shaykh: This is the whispering of Satan.

The questioner: I mean, so he does not pay attention to this, then.

The Shaykh: Not at all.
